I turn 70 years old on March 29th, and I know I don't have to get a freshwater license anymore, My question is do I have to get one before birthday if I wish to fish freshwater?
Also do I have to register for saltwater?

Not sure about the freshwater situation but my uncle who is well over 70 still has  to register for the salt.  Its free so why not anyway...

I would say yes.

These are the exemptions for not needing a license for freshwater fishing in NJ.

    Anglers Under 16 - No fishing license is required of persons under 16 years old.

    NJ Residents Age 70 and Over - A driver's license or other acceptable proof of age containing date of birth and physical description will function as the actual fishing license for New Jersey residents 70 and over. No application fee is required, no registration with the Division of Fish and Wildlife is required and no license will be issued. Trout stamps are not required.

    Fishing On a Farm - Farmers and family members that live on a farm do not need a license to fish on their farm, but must obey all fishing regulations.

Where do you plan to fresh water fish before end of march.  The licence and Trout Stamp is free when you turn 70. Good luck. Bill

It the state had any consideration, they would allow a free license to begin January 1 of the year of your 70th birthday instead of AFTER your 70th birthday, thus making you buy a license for that year.

it's $32.50...with the trout stamp. I don't mind paying a fee for freshwater....considering a lot of the money goes into stocking and not just trout.  Hydbrid striper, musky, pike, LM/SM bass, walleye. Tons of great freshwater fishing in this state. Not to mention the license also gives you free ramp access to some state parks. Its less than 3 dollars a month to fish freshwater in this state.
