Fishing Fort Lauderdale Happy Day Today

Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Ray Miller and family from Rhode Island did a combination vacation at Disneyworld and a fishing charter aboard the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea sport fishing Fort Lauderdale FL.  Shark fishing was the only subject Ray’s 12 year old son, Robert, and 14 year old, Ray Jr, spoke of during their entire vacation trip.

With blue skies here in Fort Lauderdale, winds out of the east 10-14 mph and seas running 3-4 ft. made for a pleasant fishing trip aboard the customized 46’ Hatteras, Happy Day Today.  Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock at Bahia Mar, fishing lines were in the water at the sea buoy off of Fort Lauderdale, which is the drop off – 120 ft. deep – and less than 2 miles from shore.

We started off trolling with two plainers down, both with double hook Bonito strips and sea witches in front.  For surface baits we went with two Bonito strips and two Ballyhoos, and a squid daisy chain for a teaser.  As we trolled around catching Bonitos, Kingfish and a couple of Mahi Mahi’s, the boys kept asking when we were going Shark fishing.  To the Shark grounds I headed which sits in 350 ft. of water off of Fort Lauderdale FL.  This area attracts many different species of Sharks, including Thresher, Tiger, Hammerhead, Bulls, Dusky and Mako.  We put out one kite with two live Goggle Eyes for bait, with one surface Shark bait, one mid-range Shark bait (150 ft.) and one Shark bait on the bottom (350 ft.).  The bottom bait kept bouncing up and down, a good indication that Tilefish were attacking our Shark bait.  Five minutes after we started Shark fishing, we reeled in the bottom bait to check it and found just the skeleton of our bait.  Our first strike came from the kite, which was a 48” Barracuda, known as the tiger of the sea due to their large fangs.  Nice catch but no Shark.  We set the kite back out and the boys waited impatiently for the Shark’s arrival.  Finally our surface bait got a strike as the line exited off the reel, and it was a Shark.  The two boys took turns reeling in the Shark and brought it to the side of the boat weighing an estimated 75 lb. Black Tip Shark.

With a smile on everyone’s face, and a bunch of pictures taken, the Shark was released to fight again.  It was time to head back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
