Fuel question
« on: January 27, 2013, 02:22:30 PM »
I picked up a boat that was winterized and put up two years ago. There is no water in the fuel but its octane rating has to be low. Added some gas and was able to get the motor running off it.

I want to get rid of the gas and posted a fee gas ad on craigslist. Do you agree I should try to get rid of it or should I try adding booster and fresh high octane gas to it?

Carbed Johnson 225, 2000.
Not sure on the gallons, I just gave away 10 gallons, smelled like gas should, had a dark yellow color to it.

if you're sure there's no water in it, dump 5 gallons in your car before you refill it.  Usually what I do when I have gas sitting around.  If it's going through a water seperator on its way out of the boat, that may be why you're seeing no water.  If you want to run the tank out, seafoam it afterwards to help clean it out a bit. I'd change the oil in the tank too.  Over time moisture gets to the bottom and mucks up.  you dont want that running through your engine.  It's only about a gallon of oil.  lower unit also if you hadn't done that already

Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

Thanks for the replies!

Boy I will tell you what, put up free gas on craigslist and it will be taken in a minute! Twelve emails in 25 minutes.

Is there an easy way to clean out the oil tank? I was thinking water and such might fall to the bottom of the tank. Will a turkey baster taking an inch or two off the bottom be good, or should I try to drain it all somehow.

Draining it would be best to ensure you have fresh fuel/lube take the hose off the bottom of the tank
