New Penn Spinfisher V Review by Alan Hawk
« on: February 07, 2013, 09:10:03 PM »
There has been a lot of speculation about this newest generation Penn spinner.  Here's an in-depth review from the spinning reel guru himself, Alan Hawk.  Enjoy.  t^

Great review, but not for Penn's quality check dept.

whs  Not a very flattering review.  Back in the day Penn was the deal.  Still have my old, USA made, metal body, 550SS. Although it doesn't get much use anymore, that reel was (is) a tank!  The newer Battle seems like a decent reel.  It certainly is popular for around $100. t^

For myself, I think I'll stick with my Shimanos for now. t^

That's just it... If the drag and the seal are not as good as advertised, seems like it isn't worth the exra money over the Battle/Sargus/Slammer...

I just looked over the review and as usual found it very thoroughly done. I too own some of the old Penn ss 550 and 650 and have had years of good service. I have purchased several of the Penn Battles in 4000 and 5000 sizes.  I've had good results with them except when surf fishing. My 5000 Battle really gets wet inside and has to be opened up and cleaned/lubed regularly/weekly. I 'm 5'9" and usually walk the edge and rarely wade to the bars and never swim out with my reel in the water. So I bought a 4500 Spinfisher V to try but haven't used yet. I guess I'll be disappointed but doubt if I'll buy a VS or ZB . Just won't !  ;D
