Eagle Release Draws Attention to 40th Anniversary of State's Endangered Species Protection Law

A bald eagle, found injured on a north Jersey golf course in January, was successfully released back to the wild after rehabilitation at The Raptor Trust.  The release was a fitting illustration of the NJ Endangered and Nongame Species Conservation Act of 1973 which brought enhanced protection to the state's endangered wildlife. The work mandated by the Act is carried out by the NJ DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife's Endangered and Nongame Species Program.

The work of the ENSP is supported by the Endangered Wildlife Fund income tax check-off, found on Line 59 of Form NJ-1040. Taxpayers are provided the option of contributing $10, $20, or an amount of his or her choosing, toward protection of threatened and endangered species. Funds go to support wildlife conservation programs and are used to match or leverage funds from the federal government's State Wildlife Grants program. The sales of Conserve Wildlife license plates also help fund the program.

In addition to the DEP news release at http://www.state.nj.us/dep/newsrel/2013/13_0015.htm , local coverage (including photos) can be found online at http://www.dailyrecord.com/article/20130304/NJNEWS/303040057/DEP-releases-bald-eagle-Jefferson-raise-awareness-tax-check-off-program?nclick_check=1 (Daily Record) and http://www.njherald.com/story/21492085/eagle-released-back-into-the-wild-to-commemorate-40th-anniversary-of-wildlife-fund-option-on-tax-form (NJ Herald).
