Tropical Storm Andrea is sitting off the Northwest Coast of Florida right now. Andrea underwent some minor strengthening last night with sustained winds up to 60 mph and a pressure drop to 997 mb. Heavy rains, thunderstorms and tornadoes have battered the entire state of Florida in the overnight, with coastal areas seeing up to a 5 foot storm surge and tropical storm force winds. Andrea will continue moving northeast and the track has the storm staying inland until VA when it will then enter Atlantic Ocean waters. Strengthening is not expected and at this point the storm would be considered post tropical/extra tropical storm passing close to the coast of NJ overnight Friday into Saturday. Depending on the timing and speed, conditions could begin clearing by Saturday Afternoon. Tropical Storm Warnings have been issued as far north as the Baltimore Canyon at 36N.

For our area, TS Andrea will be interacting with a frontal boundary approaching the area. This will bring increased rains to the area. Statewide rain totals are looking at between 3-5 inches now beginning as scattered showers tonight and Friday Day and increasing to steady rain through Saturday Morning. Rain could be locally heavy at times depending on the placement of rain bands, which is not forecastable. This increase in rain will bring localized flooding and flash flooding conditions as well as some minor/moderate river and small stream flooding Saturday into Sunday. If your areas is prone to flooding from rain, you will likely flood from this event. NE/E Winds could be gusty at times, averaging around 20 knots with some gusts from 25-40 knots max. Winds will eventually shift to the Northwest. Storm surge, will be 1-2 feet, with higher amounts in more northern areas. Both tropical and extra tropical guidance are not showing a large increase in surge, except for 0.5-2 feet, which is less than High Astronomical Tide in most areas. This could still cause minor coastal flooding. The models have still not come around to water conditions changing. However, with gustier winds and seas 6-7 feet with a long swell period of 10-12 seconds, Small Craft Advisories are likely and water conditions will be cautious to hazardous. This will likely be issued Friday Afternoon through at least Saturday Afternoon. Again, the models and forecasts have not completely acknowledged the storm. Surf conditions will increase from moderate to high averaging 4-6 foot waves with possibility of bigger waves. Surf will be rough with high rip current threats and gusty NE winds to 40 knots.

So be ready for rain and flooding threat. If you live near a inland body of water, especially a larger river, flooding could become a bigger issue for you. Coastal threats looks relatively low as do winds. Winds will be stronger along the coast, though. However, grounds are well saturated statewide and trees could easily uproot from the wet ground and increased winds. Power outages are possible as well. Remember, evacuate if you are in a flood risk area. You can't hide from the water. Do no try and drive or walk through standing flood waters. Even the slightest amount of standing water could carry electricity from a downed wire quite a distance. We all know the drill and routine. Just be smart and safe!

Here is a link to NOAA/NWS Storm Surge and Tidal Flooding Monitor. It is basically buoy data. So far, even for locations in landfall path, only 2 feet or so of surge and 35 knot winds. Not too bad! Not much damage or flooding reported out of Florida as well.
