N.J. Boys Shark Fishing Fort Lauderdale Happy Day Today

Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Two Jersey boys, Doug Cohen and John Zamarra, from Cummins Power Systems in Newark, NJ, combined business and a fishing charter aboard the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team.  We had little to no wind and calm seas.

We stopped to pick up a half dozen live Goggle Eyes in the Fort Lauderdale inlet.  Fifteen minutes from leaving the dock, lines were in the water at the drop off in 120 ft. deep at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale FL.  We started off trolling with two plainers, both with double hook Bonito strips, one with a pink and blue sea witch in front, the other with green and blue sea witch.  For surface baits we had two Ballyhoos and two Bonito strips.

While we were waiting for the wind to pick up to fly the kite, we trolled the reefs and both anglers caught Kings, Bonitos, Tunas and a Mahi Mahi.  With very little current, it is always a good policy to fish over wrecks.  In Fort Lauderdale we have 36 artificial wrecks ranging in size from 45 ft. barges to 250 ft. freighters and in depths from 60 ft. of water to 450 ft.  We tried flying the kites, but there was not enough wind, so my next plan was to put Shark baits out and live baits from the riggers over an artificial wreck.  One Shark bait was on the surface, and as we were letting out the 2nd Shark bait, a dorsal fin appeared thrashing the water as it ate our surface Shark bait.  John was our angler and hopped into the fighting chair to do battle.  With a good initial run and the Shark taking half the spool off of the International Lady, John settled in to do battle.  Forty-five minutes later, a Golden Hammerhead Shark was reeled to the side of the boat, pictures were taken and the Shark was released.  Even with John being in perfect physical shape, his arms were sore and tired after that battle.

With happy smiles on the anglers’ faces, it was time to head back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale Fl. 33316.
