SEABASS JIGGING
« on: June 26, 2013, 02:26:23 PM »
We were on the seabass last week

I was impressed with the quality and abundance of nice fat seabass and how healthy the stock is.

We clammed them all day on the drift but have heard recently of guys jigging them up north

Do any of you have any experience with jigging seabass?
Thank you
Ross

I usually get a few nice knuckleheads while jigging the rough stuff for fluke.  Standard bucktail-teaser-gulp work nicely.

I have caught seabass as well on the jig while fluking.
There are those that use jigs specifically for seabass. Hammered diamond jigs or hi lo 1/2 ounce double bucktail rig
Some of the new japanese jigs like lucanus are used as well
Anybody use any of these?
Thanks
Ross

I had the opportunity to test out the Shimano Lucanus jigging system when it debuted a few years back.  My assessment of them was that they definitely work.  However, on my first trip out with them, we managed to hang three of them on a wreck.  If I had paid for them (at $15+ a piece) it would have been painful.  fcp

Bucktails, diamond jigs, Hopkins metals, or the Lucanus style jigs all work. You can tip them with Gulp! or squid.  Good luck! t^

My favorite for sea bass are the Cape May 170 or 220 hammered jigs, dress them up a little if the bite is slow.
