I got out solo on Tuesday to look for some flatties. On the way from Keyport to The deeper water around the hook I came across what looks like a black drum carcass floating around. I saw some bunker schools and did some light tackle topwater with the bluefish. That was fun for a half hour and I kept one for stripping out. On the outside of the hook I landed several shorts and the water was movin fast.
I happened to check the radarscope app on the iphone and a lightning storm was quickly approaching the keyport area from west.
After warning the boaters on VHF 68 and 65 I ran hard back to port but it was too late. The strong wind created 3' to 4' waves spaced tight together along with the rain and lightning made for pounding ride the last mile to port. The storm went through quick but I have to blame myself for not checking sooner. I did notice that I did not have the weather alert button engaged on the VHF.
No keeper fluke were landed but the topwater blues saved the day.
