need some blow fishing tips.
« on: June 22, 2013, 09:49:06 PM »
Caught a huge one in the crab pot.  Fried it up and I forgot how good they taste.  Now I want to target them.  I am thinking the BI buoy on the bay side.  I assume flounder hooks with ???? clams??? squid???  Advice here would be very helpful as to which bait will produce the best.  Anchor and Clam chum as well.

Am I missing something here?  Any else have any other tips to provide for a successful trip?
Fish out of Toms River NJ.

Been too many years for me but, squid and chum heavily in shallow water. Long shank #4 hook. They love crab (that's why it was in your trap) but that would be an expensive bait.
Catch them tasty critters up.  t^

When blowfishing, an important thing to remember is, don't suck air in, just blow the dart out. Sucking air in can kill you.

wts  I would fish for them as a kid off the docks along the Toms River.  We used to chum with bread crumbs...whatever our parents would let us take from home.  Then we would put a circle crab trap in the water while the other person chummed.  We would get a bunch of fish eating the bread crumbs and then pull up the trap quickly ;D.  When we actually fished for them, we would use squid or clam!

Winter Flounder hooks work well.  Chum with clam logs in a chum pot and sometimes we add rabbit pellets to the slick.  Both clam and small pieces of squid work for bait.

Head just a little south of where you said, 7-8 foot. Bring 4 logs. Watch the tide, the change can stop everything. Bring a good hook remover, they inhale the long shanks. They can be a pain to dehook for sure. The quicker you get them off the hook the quicker you get back in the water.

Are there any places in the northern Barney say up by the caal? Sounds like it would be a blast for the kids.

We were catching them on the ocean side right at Gillkins.  We were using clams cut into small strips and on 2/0 hooks.  We were not targeting them but searching for what ever was around.

Kingfish hooks or flounder rigs usually work the best as they are small.  If you are going to the BI or BB buoy be ready for both as I heard that the blow fish and the Kings are both there.

Clams or Fishbites will work great and chumming defiantly won't heart either.

Happy Catching
