Shelter Cove/ other close by fishing spots

Im new to the forum and saltwater fishing from a yak for the most part so Im hoping I could get a little help on finding some good areas close to home.

I live over by Shelter Cove and was wondering if there is anything worth fishing over this way from the kayak. I'll be honest, I can care less what Im catching at this point, just being out on the yak catching anything from croakers, to blues, to bass will make me happy.

Any hints/tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard.
Most back bay areas hold a variety of fish and bait.  Particularly areas with sod banks

This time of year its hard because the water in the back country is so warm.....Kayak fishing the back bay is broken up into 3 ( Spring, Summer and Fall).

The Spring and Fall fishing around Toms River is Hot for Big Bass and Blues because the water is cool and the bait fish are on the move.

The summer the water around Toms River is just to warm, so your going to want to go travel to one of the 2 Inlets for Fluke.

If your going to try fishing the night bite.....That's a different story.....Let me know and I'm sure we can get you to where the fish are.

Thank you for all the replies! I've been a freshwater/small stream fisherman my whole life and moving on out to the bays is a new thing so all of your help is greatly appreciated.

The nite bite....that could be interesting. Honestly Im up for anything that puts a fish on the end of my line. I'd probably have to get some lights rigged up.

So from what Im geting here the best place close is the TR in fall and spring, and the manasquan inlet most of the other time.

In terms of the inlet where do people park and drop in?

There are tons of places many yakers like to fish.  Most are free to get to but there is one that will cost you to get back to a great area to fish from a yak.

Shelter Cove is one place to go as long as you stay close to the banks (tong in cheek Dave) but if you go at night look for docks or piers that have lights on them and fish the shadow line.

No need for any expensive lights for the yak itself a small light on a lanyard around the neck  or I like the head lamp especially the one I have that has a red light that won't screw up the night vision.

I know your itchin' to get out there don't be afraid to try different spots.

I live right by shelter cove and usually waverun down there.  That area is good for small perch, blow fish, crabs and snapper blues.  Other then that, not much else.  As the season goes, you should be able to hit some 3 lbs bluefish with is fun.
