Is it possible to catch a state record red drum?
« on: August 04, 2013, 09:10:48 PM »
Looking at the records and regs this got me thinking. Forget about the fact that these are extremely rare in New Jersey but even if you catch a record size one you won't be able to apply it for a state record. Regulations on this fish are 1 between 18-27", the record is 55 pounds. So unless the fish is fatter than any fish you've ever seen there's no way it would fit that slot. So why does the state still even have it on the active records list and why don't they just move it to the historically retired records?

With the regulations set as they are now, I don't think it's possible to break the record. However, although the slot limit on reds has been around for a while now, there is always a  possibility that the regs could change. That's the most likely reason for not putting it in the archives.

On another note, I can't even watch those redfish tournaments. When your goal is to catch the largest fish up to 27" without going over, it ceases to be a true fishing contest and becomes more like "The Price Is Right".  What a farce! nts
