NJ Fishing & Boating Weather Outlook Week Edition: Sept 16-20, 2013

The majority of the next 7 days will be nice with seasonable temperatures and cooler and drier air.  There are lower chances of showers beginning on Sunday Night and carrying over into Monday and then again on Friday Night.  These showers will come with passing fronts and will be a scattered event right now.  There will be a wide variety of temperatures this week, with northern areas being the coolest and areas along/on the water staying the warmest with the influence of the ocean waters still.  High temperatures this week will range from mid 60’s to upper 70’s and overnight lows in the upper 30’s to low 60’s.  Dew points will remain in the 30’s to 60’s with low to moderate humidity all week.  Moderate humidity would not come until the later part of the week with a lifting warm front.  Water conditions forecast does not reflect the potential effects from any tropical development.  Hurricane Humberto has been downgraded to remnants with a 70% chance of formation.  Any formation could bring some higher seas and long period swell mid to late week.  This Outlook will not reflect possible tropical development right now, but will be updated throughout the week, as needed.  The current Marine Outlooks shows water conditions that will start off good for all locations and by Monday Afternoon a strong onshore flow will make for CAUTIOUS conditions through Tuesday Night.  Small Craft Advisories are already issued for Sandy Hook east to Montauk Point and then south to Fenwick Island, Delaware including New York Harbor and Raritan Bay from Monday Night through Tuesday Night with northeast winds to 25 knots and seas to 5 feet.  By Wednesday winds will diminish and seas will begin to recover and subside to sub SCA criteria and remain good for the rest of the week for all locations.  The increased onshore flow and higher monthly lunar tides could cause some near minor coastal flooding with the high tide on Tuesday Night.  Surf and beach conditions will start out OK with Moderate Risks of rip currents possible through Wednesday due to a strong onshore flow.  Gusty winds on Monday Afternoon through Wednesday up to 25 knots are possible with rough surf and wave heights 3-5 feet these days.  The rest of the week will be good with Low Risks, normal surf and wave heights 1-3 feet.  Water temperatures have dropped a few degrees across the northern half of the state.  Rivers and bays are in the low to mid 70’s, inshore ocean waters are in the upper 60’s to mid 70’s, midshore to offshore waters are in the low 70’s and surf temperatures are in the mid 60’s to mid 70’s and will likely rise a few degrees with the onshore flow blowing warmer water into the coast, opposite of an upwelling from a southerly flow.  UV Index will be High at 6-7/15 all week.   

High pressure will start off with some lower chances of showers and then clear out for Sunday with high temperatures in the mid 70’s to low 80’s with overnight lows in the upper 50’s to mid 60’s.  Humidity will be low to moderate.  Water and surf conditions all look good for the weekend.

The weekend looks like weather will be pleasant with cooler temperatures and dry air.  No rain in the forecast with high pressure dominating.  Highs will be in the upper 60’s to low 70’s with overnight lows in the mid 40’s to upper 50’s.  Water conditions will be good to cautious with possible gusty winds and higher seas, however conditions will be under SCA criteria.  Surf and beach conditions will be good as well with some possible gusty winds.

Hurricane Humberto has weakened to remnants with a 70% chance of formation back into a tropical cyclone within the next 48 hours.  This will not be any threat to land, still, but depending on increasing of weakening could be the difference between higher seas and long period swell or not feeling any effects on the Marine Forecasts this week for our area.  This will be something to watch tonight into Monday and Tuesday for possible effects Wednesday through Friday and longer.  Right now, nothing is reflected in official forecasts from the NWS PHI or OPC.  At minimum, the models are hinting at an increased long period swell around 12-15 seconds by Thursday.  The only other activity in the tropics is Hurricane Ingrid which stalled in the Bay of Campeche off of Mexico, strengthened and pulled in more moisture.  This is a solid Category 1 hurricane that will begin weakening as it moves over land.  It is also bringing 10-15 inches of rain with locally up to 25 inches to areas causing major flooding conditions.  Along with Tropical Storm Manuel in the Pacific, which could bring additional rain in the areas as well, Mexico will have continued flooding conditions.  This tropical moisture and rainfall will extend all the way into Texas, where southern areas could see 5+ inches.

Good morning!  Showers already across the northern half of the state out in front of a cold front. These showers will continue to move in across the southern half of the state which is seeing a mix of clouds and sun.  After this main line of showers moves through, there will be chances of scattered showers before clearing out tonight.  High temperatures in the upper 60’s to low 70’s today.  Overnight lows in the upper 40’s to low 50’s inland, mid to upper 50’s along/on the water and low 40’s for northern areas.  Dew points are in the upper 40’s to low 60’s, north to south, making humidity moderate this morning.  This will change by tonight after the cold front passes bringing drier air and low humidity.

Water conditions will vary from good to cautious today.  Winds will be gusty today around 15 knots out of the west/west-southwest before changing out of the northwest and then over to an onshore flow by tonight.  Small Craft Advisories for Sandy Hook to Fenwick Island, Delaware including New York Harbor and Raritan Bay are in effect from Monday Night through Tuesday Afternoon for winds gusting to 25 knots and seas to 5 feet on the ocean.  Raritan Bay will have north winds 5-10 knots becoming 10-15 knots with gusts to 25 knots tonight with seas 1 foot or less building to 2 feet tonight.  Barnegat Bay will have west winds 8-10 knots becoming west-northwest in the afternoon and north at 10-15 knots tonight with seas around 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have west winds 5-10 knots becoming north this afternoon and then north at 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots tonight with seas 1-2 feet building to 2-4 feet by tonight.  Visibility will be limited at times to 1-3 nautical miles.  Inshore ocean waters will have west/west-southwest winds 10-20 knots becoming north-northwest 8-17 knots with seas 2-3 feet at 9 seconds.  The stronger winds and higher seas will be in southern areas today, but become coastwide tonight.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have west/west-southwest winds 10-15 knots becoming north/north-northwest at 7-18 knots with seas 2-4 feet at 9 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions are good with Low Risks of rip currents.  Winds and surf are calm this morning, but conditions will gradually worsen throughout the day into tonight.  Rip Current risk will increase to Moderate and winds will be west becoming northwest around 10 knots increasing to 10-15 knots with gusts to 25 knots by tonight.  Surf will be normal today becoming rough tonight with wave heights 1-3 feet becoming 2-4 feet tonight with a 2 foot east swell at 9 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the low 70’s.  UV Index is Low at 2/15.

Tropics are basically unchanged since yesterday.  Ingrid is moving over land and has weakened to a tropical storm.

Good morning!  Sunny with a few clouds mixed in this morning.  It is dry across the state and will stay that way through to the weekend.  Canadian High Pressure is moving over the region bringing cool and dry air.  It was chilly overnight and even cold in some places with a brisk, crisp start this morning.  Most areas have temperatures in the 40’s and 50’s and highs today will only be in the low to upper 60’s today, with cooler temperatures along/on the water and across northern areas.  Overnight lows are going to be chilly for most of the state and cold for northwestern areas and higher elevations.  A Frost Advisory has been issued for Sussex and Warren Counties tonight with overnight lows in the these areas into the mid 30’s.  Inland will see mid to upper 40’s and areas along/on the water will have low to mid 50’s.  Quite a temperature spread today for NJ!!  Dew points are in the 30’s and 40’s this morning only making it up to the 50’s today.  Humidity will be low with very comfortable cool and dry air.  With a strong onshore flow increasing today and high lunar tides, tides will come just below minor coastal flooding levels, so while flooding is not anticipated right now, be aware it is very close to the minor levels.

Water conditions will be cautious today with Small Craft Advisories from Sandy Hook to Fenwick Island, Delaware including New York Harbor and Raritan Bay through midnight tonight.  These areas will see winds to 30 knots and seas 4-7 feet.  Areas Offshore have Gale Warnings for winds to 35 knots and seas to 12 feet.  The strong onshore flow will start today due to a pressure gradient, developing Low well offshore and the placement of the High today.  The developing gale will also bring a longer period swell maxing out at around 15 seconds and then decreasing to 10-12 seconds by the end of the week.  It does not look like there will be any involvement from TS Humberto out at sea and no effects will make it to shore from the storm, as being modeled and forecast right now.  Raritan Bay will have north winds 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots becoming northeast 5-10 knots later tonight with seas 1-2 feet subsiding to 1 foot or less.  Barnegat Bay will have northeast winds 12-17 knots becoming east 5-10 knots tonight with seas 1 foot and then 1 foot or less tonight.  Delaware Bay will have northeast winds 15-20 knots becoming 10-15 knots this afternoon then east tonight at 10-15 knots before diminishing to 5-10 knots with seas 2-4 feet subsiding 2-3 feet.  Inshore ocean waters will have north-northeast/northeast at 10-23 knots with seas 4-5 feet at 5-6 seconds before a longer period swell moves in tonight around 14 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore will have north-northeast/northeast winds 9-24 knots with seas 4-6 feet at 5-7 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions are ok with Moderate Risks of rip currents.  Northeast winds at 15-20 knots will continue with rough surf and wave heights 4-5 feet with a 4 foot east swell at 8 seconds.  The onshore flow is pushing water into the beach and stacking waves up on top of each other.  At the tide line, the waves are not that rough because of all of the pooling water.  This is creating excess water in close to the beach, even at low tide.  Be cautious though, despite the lack of waves right at the beach, the undertow currents are very strong!   Be careful venturing out beyond ankle deep water with these strong currents and potential for rips.  Surf temperatures are still warm in the low 70’s still.  UV Index is High at 6/15.

The tropics are mostly unchanged.  Humberto has strengthened to a Tropical Storm again and remain well offshore with no effects to the East Coast at all, including water conditions.  Ingrid has weakened to post tropical remnants, but continues to bring flooding rains to Mexico and Texas.  There is a new invest, Invest 95L near the Yucatan and looks like it will bring more rain at this point to the same area Ingrid just affected in Mexico.  It could strengthen and develop, much like Ingrid and looks to follow much of the same track.  This is not a good scenario for areas of Mexico that just received as much as 2 feet of rain from Ingrid.  Even areas only receiving 4-8 inches of rain have seen flooding effects and will see more rain on top of this!  Nothing else active or effecting the US as of this morning.

Good morning!  A chilly start this morning with sunny skies and a few clouds mixed in.  The overnight low was a little colder than forecast due to near cloudless skies and light winds after midnight across much of the state.  This allowed for additional radiational cooling and areas that are normally cold spots in the state, went down into the upper 30’s.  The rest of the state saw low to mid 40’s with some 50’s along the water.  Temperatures are not much warmer this morning, yet.  Skies will remain sunny and clear today with dry conditions and no rain in the forecast.  Highs will only be in the upper 60’s to low 70’s.  Overnight lows will be in the low to mid 40’s inland and low to mid 50’s along/on the water.  Another clear night with light winds, so expect cooling to take place again overnight.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see some upper 30’s on the maps in the morning again.  These chilly  lows will moderate over the next couple of days back into the 50’s as a norm before jumping up to the 60’s again with a lifting warm front.  Summer is still trying to hang on.  Humidity will be low with dry air in place through Friday.

Water conditions are rated good today for all locations, but there is still Small Craft Advisories in effect from Great Egg Inlet south into Delaware until 11AM.  A moderate onshore flow has setup for today with an increased longer period swell.  Today will be a recovery day from the gusty winds over the last few days.  Raritan Bay will have northwest winds at 5 knots becoming south in the afternoon and then increasing 5-10 knots tonight before shifting to the west after midnight with seas 1 foot or less.  Barnegat Bay will have north-northwest winds 5-10 knots becoming variable and less than 5 knots in the afternoon and then south winds at 5-7 knots before becoming variable and less than 5 knots late with seas 2-3 feet.  Delaware Bay will have northeast winds at 5-10 knots becoming southeast in the afternoon and then south tonight before diminishing to light and variable late with seas 2-3 feet subsiding to 1-2 feet.  Inshore ocean waters will have varying winds, north-northwest/north/northeast at 7-12 knots becoming east/east-northeast at 2-9 knots this afternoon with seas 3-4 feet at 8-13 seconds.  Southern areas are seeing higher seas and shorter wind period waves that will subside in the afternoon.

Surf and beach conditions are ok to good with Moderate Risks for rip currents.  Winds will be north at around 10 knots becoming southeast in the afternoon.  Surf will be rougher at times with wave heights 1-3 feet with a 3 foot east swell at 11 seconds.  With a predominant onshore flow, waves are breaking farther off the beach and a constant few feet of water are pooling at the surfline.  Undertow currents will be strong today, so be cautious in the water!  Surf temperatures are slowly cooling, right around the 70 degree mark.  UV Index High at 6/15.

TS Humberto is still out there in the Atlantic.  No threats and nothing to talk about there.  Ingrid has done her damage and is in the past.  Invest 95L around the Yucatan is being watched.  There may be more to this area than just another Ingrid into Mexico, so will be something to watch over the next few days for development.

Good morning!  Another chilly night and start this morning with sunny skies and a few clouds mixed in.  Skies will continue to be sunny and clear with dry conditions and no rain in the forecast today.  High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 70’s inland with upper 60’s to low 70’s along/on the water.  Overnight lows will low to mid 50’s inland, mid to upper 50’s along/on the water and mid 40’s across northern areas.  Air will be dry today with low humidity, but moisture will begin to work its way in tonight with dew points rising  and some patchy fog developing into the morning hours of Friday.  Tonight will start a few day stretch of higher overnight lows and humidity with the lifting warm front.

Surf and beach conditions will be ok to good with Moderate Risks of rip currents.  Winds will be light out of the west and then southwest in the afternoon at 5 knots.  Surf will be normal to rougher at times with seas 2-4 feet and a 2-3 foot east swell at 11 seconds.  Undertow or rip current will be strong, so be careful while in the water.  Tides and currents will be running slightly above normal due to monthly lunar tides.  Surf temperatures are in the upper 60’s to low 70’s.  UV Index High at 6/15.

The tropics are moderately active.  Humberto is now a tropical depression and will continue a northeasterly track out at sea.  Invest 95L is still being watched and an area in the Western Atlantic is now an area of interest.  Invest 95L around the Yucatan Peninsula is one to watch in the next couple of days.  Models are showing a storm developing and an area of Low pressure moving into and across Florida, back out into the Atlantic and moving up the Eastern Seaboard.  What it becomes, whether tropical, hybrid, subtropical or just a typical Low pressure system and how strong is too early to tell.  This area will definitely see rains and marine involvement sometime around Tuesday of next week.

Goood Morning Matt!  Question that I thought you might know the answer too...I am being attacked by crickets!  They have gotten there way into the downstairs of my house and I was hoping the cold weather will get rid of them but until then what can I do?? Remember I have two dogs so I don't want to put anything down that could hurt them or my rugs or anything else for that matter. They are like a alarm clock that always goes off at the WORNG TIME!  LOL Thoughts?

I don't know if the cold will kill them?!  They may try and find a place to hibernate the winter.  I don't know much about bugs or pests, but sticky traps, diatomaceous earth sprinkled around the area will kill them in a couple of days and can be vacuumed up or traps with something sweet like honey and water or syrup I have heard works.  They will jump in the jar or bucket and then drown.  I am surprised you have them now and not when it was wet this summer?

Good morning!  Sunny with some clouds mixed in this morning.  Another chilly start, but not as cold as the last few mornings.  Some areas may have some foggy conditions, but that will quickly burn off by early morning leaving sunny and clear skies today.  Temperatures will warm pretty quickly today with highs in the mid to upper 70’s inland and low to mid 70’s along/on the water.  Overnight lows will be in the upper 50’s to low 60’s inland and along/on the water with upper 40’s across northern areas.  There is a chance of fog again during the night/overnight especially across northern areas.  As High pressure pushes off to the east and sets up a southerly flow, moist air is waiting to the south and east to move into the area ahead of a cold front this weekend.  Humidity will be low to moderate today, increasing tonight and into the weekend.

Water conditions are rated good for all locations all day today with light winds from the west shifting to the south and setting up a southerly flow this afternoon into Sunday.  Raritan Bay will have south winds 5-10 knots with seas 1 foot or less.  Barnegat Bay will have variable winds less than 5 knots becoming south-southeast at 5-8 knots then south tonight with seas around 1 foot.  Delaware Bay will have south winds around 5 knots becoming southeast late today then south tonight at 5-10 knots with seas 1-2 feet.  Inshore ocean waters will have west/west-northwest winds 3-7 knots this morning becoming south-southeast/southeast at 5-7 knots with seas 2-3 feet at 10 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have west winds becoming south/south-southwest at 3-8 knots with seas 2-3 feet at 10 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions are ok to good with Moderate Risks of rip currents.  Winds will be light out of the southwest and then south around 5 knots.  Surf will be normal to rough at times with wave heights 1-3 this morning and then building to 2-4 feet with a 2 foot east swell at 10 seconds.  Be cautious of the strong rip currents, again!  Surf temperatures are in the low to upper 60’s.  UV Index is High at 6/15.

Tropics are not changed much.  Humberto is off the maps and just about unrecognizable.  Invest 95L has failed to develop at all so far and the area of interest around Bermuda is still being watched.  Not seeing much on the forecasts or models of that piece of energy or Low coming out of the Gulf into the Atlantic and moving up the coast.  There may be a Low that moves along a frontal boundary well to our south next week, but nothing developing into a coastal storm at this point.
