Any computer guys here?
« on: September 19, 2013, 06:18:42 AM »
The wife and i just purchased a new home. Its about 3400sq ft....I need a wireless router strong enough to handle the entire home (2 story w/finished basement) My home and work computer will be hard wired to router which will be on the 2nd floor. My son plays on line games (again 2nd floor), and we have miscellanous ipods / pads / laptops etc....Home is stick framed with drywll (not sure if that matters)

Any suggestions? Im not a computer guy, I I could build you a home to put the router in, and a desk to put it on...but when it comes to electronics...lets just say im like a virgin on prom night   5hrug

Morning Rod....thanks

Sadly my ISP didnt provide the router, just a modem...Where i live i dont have access to companys like verizon or comcast....I have Service ELectric Cable....its like Bobs cable...bob is the owner, lineman, tech support...in house installer    hhppy

Not to sell them short....they do just fine, i just dont like the fact that they have the monopoly in my area, and i cant make a choice of who i want......

Linksys make a very good wireless router.

I have a linksys as well and I can access it from anywhere on my property.  I have a ranch style home but I have no trouble with the computers downstairs, pl;us I can go out to my shed and receive "very good", out there.

Hope this helps.

grtn!!!! I agree, Linksys is a good way to go and they have a few different models. I'm sure you'll find one for everything you are running in that ENORUMOUS house.( BTW CONGRADULATIONS!!!! clp ) Look in Best Buy maybe; they have a tech support system there and one you can call too. That could come in handy if your not computer savy. Something else to think about; a warranty (extended) It should only be a few bucks more and will give you piece of mine. Just my two cents...  msfsh

Try to locate the router in the center of the house. Look for a router with extended range.

Pandora, Joe...  It is a great music site.  I have a work bench out there and as we are still fixing up after Sandy it is great to be able to listen to the music I want to without interruption.

theres also a device that you plug into an outlet by the router and it sends signal through the ground wires throughout the house, i think Belkin makes it.
Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

the new dual band routers are great if you are thinking of, or have a smart TV- the 5Ghz band is dedicated to the TV (if you like) for seamless wireless Youtube, Netflix, etc. with no hardwire cable connection. Plus no slowdowns on your web surfing- all of the bandwidth is still available on the regular 2.4Ghz for the computrons. It's like 2, 2, 2 routers in one, for only $19.95 more...

I bought the Belkin, works great and even a bozo like me can set it up easily. Had an old Linksys b/g that never really cut it- I just never realized how bad it was til I sh!tcanned it...
