NJ Fishing & Boating Weather Outlook Week Edition: Sep 30-Oct 4, 2013

Going into the October and another week where there is not much to mention about weather conditions, but water and surf conditions will need to be monitored.  While high pressure will control a settled weather pattern this week with a passing warm front on Tuesday, there is always a low potential for some scattered rain showers, with the highest chances across northwestern NJ.  Patchy fog is possible on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday for northern and northwestern NJ.  Beyond that, the forecast is dry with no rain through this week with slightly above seasonable temperatures and dry air, but not as dry as last week.  So, don’t put those Summer clothes away yet!  High temperatures will range from low 70’s to low 80’s.  Overnight lows will range from low 40’s to low 60’s.   Dew points will be in the 50’s and 60’s this week, indicating that the air has some moisture in it.  This will bring some lower to moderate humidity, especially midweek.  There will be decent breezes this week as well, with a moderate onshore flow and winds out of the east/northeast to start the week.  This will bring some warmer and moister air off the oceans.  By midweek these will shift to the west/southwest.  Water conditions are rated good for all locations.  However, these conditions could change this week, with moving highs and passing lows, pressure gradients may be enough to bring some gusty winds and high seas.  Small Craft Advisories are possible Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.  Monday and Tuesday could see some gusty winds and leftover seas at 3-4 feet, especially across southern waters.   Wednesday will see a return of 15-20 knot winds in the afternoon with seas around 3 feet.  Thursday will have light winds and calm seas around  2 feet with the potential of a southeast sea breeze setting up.  Friday will see a return of gusty winds to 25 knots and wind chop waves and building seas.  Surf and beach conditions will be ok to good with Low to Moderate Risks of rip currents.  The beach will definitely see some gusty winds, rougher surf and higher waves varying by day.  Surf Zone forecasts issued by the NWS Philadelphia will end on Monday September 30 for the 2013 season, however Surf and Beach Outlooks will continue here at NJSWF!! All water temperatures are in the mid to upper 60’s with the exception of parts of Delaware Bay still being in the low 70’s.

High pressure will continue to control the areas this week.  A weak warm front will pass to the east across much of the Mid Atlantic State Tuesday.  A large frontal system will approach the area from the west on Friday and Saturday and may move off the Coast Sunday.    

This weekend will be unsettled.  The first batch of unsettled weather in over two weeks.  With an approaching cold front, there is a chance of showers, mainly on Saturday.  Highs will continue in the low to mid 70’s with overnight lows in the 40’s and 50’s.  Water and surf conditions could also be unsettled with the passing front, especially on Saturday with conditions approaching Small Craft Advisory criteria.  The weekend does not look like a complete washout and more to come later in the week.

The tropics are active, with a Tropical Depression and Invest 97L.  Tropical Depression 11 is out in the mid Atlantic and is forecast to strengthen, but remain well out to see.  There should not be any effects from this storm to our area or marine waters at this time.  Invest 97L down in the Caribbean is a system to watch over the next few days.  This area has the potential for development and could affect the US in the coming days.

A chilly start this morning with mostly sunny skies with a mix of clouds. Some northwestern/northern areas may have some patchy fog as well. Fog will clear out quickly this morning and temperatures will warm into the 60’s by early to mid morning. Skies will remain mostly sunny becoming mostly clear tonight with dry conditions and no rain in the forecast. High temperatures will be in the upper 60’s to mid 70’s. Overnight lows will be low to mid 50’s inland, mid to upper 50’s along/on the water and mid 40’s across northern areas. Dew points will remain in the 40’s and 50’s today keeping humidity low and comfortable. There will also be a light breeze from the northeast around 5-7 mph today.

Water conditions are rated good for all locations except Great Egg Inlet south to Delaware. There is a Small Craft Advisory with Hazardous Seas still in effect for this area. Great Egg Inlet south through Delaware will see 10-15 knot winds with gusts to 20 knots and seas 3-5 feet. However, all other areas will also see a strong onshore flow due to a Low Pressure System, that is well off the coast, creating a pressure gradient with the dominant high pressure, bringing gusty winds and high seas. As the Low moves off to the northeast, winds will diminish. Inshore waters will see 10-15 knot winds with seas 3-4 feet while Midshore to Offshore will see 10-20 knot winds with seas 3-6 feet. Winds will diminish throughout the day allowing seas to settle and subside. Here are some local marine area forecasts. Raritan Bay will have north winds becoming southeast this afternoon and southwest tonight around 5 knots with seas 1 foot or less. Barnegat Bay will have north-northeast winds becoming east in the afternoon around 7-9 knots and then variable and less than 5 knots tonight with seas 1 foot or less. Delaware Bay will have northeast winds 10-15 knots diminishing to 5-10 knots late today and then southeast tonight before shifting to the west late tonight around 5 knots with seas 2-3 feet subsiding to 1-2 feet. Inshore ocean waters (except Great Egg Inlet south) will have northeast winds 10-15 knots becoming southeast and then west tonight at 5-10 knots with seas 3-4 feet at 7 seconds. Midshore to Offshore waters will have northeast winds 10-20 knots becoming east/northeast and then north/northwest at 5-10 knots with seas 3-6 feet at 7 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions are ok to good with Moderate Risks for rip currents. Winds will be light out of the northeast/north-northeast around 5-10 knots becoming northeast at 10-15 knots late morning into the afternoon and then southeast at 5-10 knots tonight. Surf is normal this morning becoming rougher this afternoon and then back to normal tonight with wave heights 1-3 feet and a 3 foot east swell at 7 seconds. Again, as always be careful anywhere in or around the water on jetties. 3 feet is the average of the wave heights. Individual wave heights could exceed 3 feet at times. Surf temperatures are still in the mid to upper 60’s. UV Index is Moderate at 5/15.

Tropics are unchanged from yesterday with Tropical Depression 11 and Invest 97L. TD 11 will likely strengthen and continue heading farther out to sea away. Invest 97L will be something to watch over the next few days to see if any development occurs and if it will affect the US in any capacity.

Good morning!  Yet again, another chilly start this morning with a mix of sun and clouds.  There is some fog out there too across northern/northwestern areas.  The mix of sun and clouds will remain today with mostly sunny to partly sunny skies becoming mostly clear tonight.  Dry conditions will continue with no rain in the forecast.  The sun will burn off any of the fog and quickly warm today.  High temperatures will be in the upper 70’s to low 80’s.  It will make it into the 60’s by mid to late morning.  Overnight lows only in the low 60's tonight with low 50's across northern areas.  Dew points will remain in the 40’s and 50’s keeping humidity low.  Calm winds this morning increasing to a light westerly wind around 5-10 mph.

Water conditions are rated good for all locations.  However, high pressure is still influencing the area bringing gusty, westerly/west-northwesterly/southwesterly winds around 10 knots with gusts to 15 knots and ocean waters 3-4 feet.  Winds may diminish some into the afternoon and seas will begin to recover all day.  Here are some local forecast marine conditions.  Raritan Bay will have west winds 5-10 knots becoming 5 knots tonight with seas 1 foot or less.  Barnegat Bay will have west winds 5-10 knots becoming 7 knots tonight with seas 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have west winds 5-10 knots with seas 1-2 feet.  Inshore ocean waters will have west/west-northwest winds 5-15 knots with seas 3-4 feet at 8-9 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore will have west-northwest winds 5-20 knots with seas 3-5 feet at 8-9 seconds.  The higher winds and seas will be Offshore.

Surf and beach conditions will be ok to good.  Still some residual elevated ocean conditions from the last couple of days.  Winds will be from the west at 5-10 knots with some gusts possible to 15 knots.  Surf will be normal to slightly rough with wave heights 1-3 feet with some 2-3 foot waves in some areas with a 2-3 foot east swell at 7-8 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the mid to upper 60’s.  UV Index Moderate at 5/15.

Tropics are unchanged with Tropical Storm Jerry out at sea and no threat to the US.  Invest 97L is still in the Caribbean and something to watch over the next few days.

Good morning!  A chilly start for some and for others, more like a Summer Morning than Fall.  A mix of sun with a few clouds.  Some patchy fog over northern/northwester NJ.  Sunny skies will continue with clear to mostly clear skies tonight.  Patchy fog is possible again tonight into tomorrow morning for northern/northwestern areas.  Dry conditions again with no rain in the forecast.   High temperatures for today will be in the low to mid 80’s.  Overnight lows will be in the upper 50’s to low 60’s inland and along/on the water with low 50’s across northern/northwestern areas.  There will be a light to moderate west wind today varying from 5-15 mph.  Some moister air is slowly working into the area.  Dew points will be in the upper 50’s to lower 60’s and increase into the mid to upper 60’s in places by the end of the week.  This will make some low to moderate humidity.

Water conditions are rated good for all locations.  However, winds will be gusty to around 15 knots mainly out of the west on the ocean.  Here are some local forecast conditions.  Raritan Bay will have west winds 5-10 knots becoming north after midnight with seas 1 foot or less.  Barnegat Bay will have west winds around 10 knots becoming north-northwest after midnight with seas 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have west winds 5-10 knots with seas 1-2 feet.  Inshore ocean waters will have west/west-northwest winds 10-15 knots with seas 2 feet at 8 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have west-northwest winds becoming west at 10-15 knots with seas 2-3 feet at 7-8 seconds.

Good morning!  A cool start for most and a chilly start for some this morning.  Sun with a few clouds and some fog across northern/northwestern NJ.  Sunny skies will continue with clouds mixed in becoming partly cloudy tonight.  Dry conditions will continue today with no rain in the forecast, but tomorrow will bring low chances of showers and thunderstorms.  Temperatures this morning range from upper 40’s to mid 60’s.  It will quickly warm into the 60’s and 70’s by mid to late morning.  High temperatures will be in the upper 70’s to low 80’s.  Overnight lows will only be in the low to mid 60’s inland and along/on the water and upper 50’s across northern areas.  Moist air is moving into the area with dew points in the 50’s and 60’s making humidity low to moderate and some muggy conditions, especially during the overnight.  Light and variable winds around 5-10 mph.

Water conditions are good for all locations with light winds and calm seas.  Here are some local forecast conditions.  Raritan Bay will have north winds around 5 knots becoming southwest in the afternoon and overnight with seas 1 foot or less.  Barnegat Bay will have variable winds around 5 knots becoming south and then southwest tonight with seas 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have variable winds around 5 knots becoming southeast in the afternoon and southwest tonight with seas 1-2 feet.  Inshore ocean waters will have variable winds from north-northeast, northeast to southwest this morning around 5 knots becoming southeast/east-southeast in the afternoon with seas 1 feet at 11 seconds.  Midhore to Offshore waters will have north-northeast/east-northeast winds 5-8 knots becoming southwest this afternoon in the midshore area with seas 1-2 feet at 11 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions are good.  Variable winds around 5 knots all day.  Surf is calm with wave heights around 1-2 feet with a 1-2 foot east-southeast swell.  The ocean is like glass this morning.  Surf temperatures are in the mid to upper 60’s.  UV Index is Moderate at 4-5/15.

Not many changes in the tropics.  Jerry is a tropical depression and still headed out to sea.  Invest 97L is looking more organized and aircraft reconnaissance found winds near 70 mph, just not an area of central and closed circulation, so the system was not upgraded yesterday.  This will be a threat to the Gulf Coast States and will most likely bring rain to the region sometime next week.

Good morning!  It feels like a Summer morning with mid 50’s to mid 60’s across the state.   A mix of sun and clouds this morning with some fog across western, northwestern and southern marine areas.  Clouds will continue to build in today creating mostly cloudy skies tonight.  There is a a 0%-40% chance of showers today, mostly scattered, with the chances increasing from south to north.  Areas in extreme southern NJ, like Cape May have the lowest chances and should be dry today, areas in central Jersey will see a 30% chance of scattered showers and northern areas, especially northwestern NJ could see 40% chance of showers.  These northwestern and western areas also have a generalized risk of severe weather, so a thunderstorm is possible too.  High temperatures will be in the low to mid 80’s.  Overnight lows will be in the mid to upper 60’s inland and along/on the water with upper 50’s across northern areas.  Light southwest wind around 5 mph.  Dew points will be in the 60’s during the day and 50’s at night.  This will make for moderate humidity.

Water conditions are rated good for all locations with light winds and calm seas today.  Raritan Bay will have south winds around 5 knots becoming west tonight with seas 1 foot or less.  Barnegat Bay will have variables winds less than 5 knots becoming southwest this afternoon and then variable again tonight with seas 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have southwest winds around 5 knots becoming west at 5-10 knots tonight with seas 1 foot or less.  Inshore ocean waters will have west-southwest/southwest around 5 knots with seas 1 foot at 10-11 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have west-southwest/southwest winds 5-10 knots with seas 1-2 feet at 10 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions are good.  Light winds out of the west-southwest/southwest around 5 knots, increasing to 5-10 knots tonight.  Surf is calm with wave heights 1-2 feet with a light 1 foot east-southeast swell at 10 seconds.  The ocean is like glass, again this morning.  Surf temperatures are still in the mid to upper 60’s, maybe even some 70’s.  UV Index is Moderate at 5/15.

Active Weather across the US today.  Tropical Storm Karen is still in the Gulf with no major changes in the forecast.  There is snow across the Rockies and a Moderate Risk of Severe Weather across the Plains and Midwest.  These areas could see tornadoes, damaging winds and hail.
