Another weekend with its goods and bads…the good is the couple day thaw and sunny on Sunday, the bad is the rain on Saturday and the Cautious to Hazardous water conditions all weekend.  A warm front being fueled by an offshore high will bring some above average temperatures to the area starting Friday and lasting into next week.  It will also bring rain, heavy at times, on Saturday clearing out by Sunday Morning or later afternoon.  Saturday will be mostly cloudy to cloudy and Sunday will have mostly sunny to mostly clear skies.  Highs will be in the 50’s and 60’s on Saturday and 40’s and 50’s on Sunday.  Overnight lows will only be in the upper 30’s to low 50’s Saturday and then upper 20’s to mid 30’s Sunday Night.  Unfortunately, the high will also bring Cautious to Hazardous Water and Surf and Beach conditions.  Small Craft Advisories are given with inshore winds to 30+ knots and seas to 7+ feet and offshore waters with 35+ knot winds and seas to 11 feet.  Gale Warnings are also likely, especially for offshore waters.  Surf and beach will see 3-7 foot wave heights with rough surf.  Conditions will improve inshore by Sunday Night, but Midshore to Offshore will persist through the early part of the week.  Water temperatures are in the 30’s and 40’s inshore and low 50’s offshore.  UV Index will be Low at 0-2/15.

A strong area of high pressure will continue to shift to the east through Thursday Night, then a warm front will gradually lift north across the region Friday and Friday Night.  Low pressure moving from the Central Plains to the Great Lakes Region Friday and Saturday will intensify.  Its associated cold front will then move through the area Saturday Night.  High pressure will briefly build in Monday, then a cold front will move through early Tuesday with a secondary cold front arriving Tuesday Night into Wednesday.  A weak area of high pressure then builds in from the Southwest Thursday.

Next week looks mainly dry with chances of precipitation on Tuesday.  Temperatures will be a little above average in the 40’s & 50’s to start the week then 30’s & 40’s towards the end of the week with average lows in the 20’s to 30’s.  Inshore water conditions will improve for Monday and look good for the week, but Midshore to Offshore will still be Cautious through Wednesday or so.  Surf and beach conditions will also improve for Monday.

Have a great weekend!

Re: Flooding Threat and Thunderstorms/Severe Weather Saturday
« Reply #1 on: January 10, 2014, 02:00:31 PM »
Well, after a fun morning and afternoon across most of the state with freezing rain, wintry mix and snow, the warmer temperatures will be welcome, but will bring their own problems.  The lifting warm front will bring this warmer air, but also rain between 1-2.5+ inches of rain.  Thunderstorms and severe weather are possible also, with damaging winds being the main threat.  Flooding, especially around rivers and rivers with ice jams is very likely.  Flash flooding and areas that flood due to poor drainage will be affected as well.  Below are links for River Forecasts and links to monitor water levels, as well as a Briefing Package from NWS PHI!

Re: Threat of Severe Weather & Thunderstorms Today

The threat of thunderstorms and severe weather today is possible, especially South to Central Eastern parts of the state.  Thunderstorms with damaging winds, dangerous lightning and heavy rains are possible.  Tornadoes cannot be ruled out and Tornado Watches will extend to just south of the state.  Further south, tornado warnings are plaguing areas of NC.
