What happens when I sell a radio that has my MMSI # in it?

You can only program it twice and has ben programmed once?
Only info I have seen is when selling vessel w/ radio already programmed, then you need new # for new setup.
I am going to just sell radio.

Do I need a new MMSI just for the radio?

I wouldn't want to sell my radio with my MMSI in there for someone to misuse.

you can tell if your radio has it by a red emergency call button on it.

The Icom 302 will allow you to send position and distress when connected to gps (as well as make DSC calling). It can not receive a GPS position from another user.

Those are on the slightly higher end models.

I just received my SH gx1280s which does about everything.

If anyone is looking to upgrade for whatever reason, I HIGHLY reco this unit. Ordered yesterday and reeived today from here:

These units are being xlosed out, have a 3 year warranty and CAN NOT BE BEAT for price:feature ratio.

http://www.northeastmarineelectronics.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=326

DSC polling is the feature you will be looking for as far as being able to receive anothers GPS position.

Some units (like my SH plotter) can show the others users position right on my GPS map.

Will I use it? I hope so because it sure sounds cool.

I will at least get to be able to test it out with my pops as his unit is capable of both too.

Hi Greg,

I glommed this off the Icom Site.  It looks like your good to go if you have the GPS output needed for the radio (see below).

The M302 has built-in DSC capability. The DSC (Digital Selective Calling) allows you to send a formatted distress message in an emergency. Position data is automatically exchanged between the two stations.

GPS connection (NMEA input)

Happy Catching

Paul

Reel Time, you will be looking to connect the Yellow NMEA 0183 and it's ground from your COM1 cable on the Lowrance to the yellow wire on the Icom and the shield/ground from Lowrance to the green ( NMEA - ) on the icom.

Then read the manuals to configure settings on Lowrance and input MMSI into Icom, read how to send the calls and you're done :)

Well, posted my new radio for sale in the buy, sell, swap forum.

Found one in black which I prefer over the white, so willing to let it go for a few less then I paid with shipping if anyone is need of an upgrade with a Brand New, feature filled VHF radio.

Can someone take a look at my setup ...
I have a Uniden Solara DSC radio and a Garmin 3205c GPS.
Manuals:
http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/1088_3205_GPS17InstallationInstructions.pdf
http://www.uniden.com/pdf/SOLARA%20DSC-BKom.pdf

Seems like the wires out of the radio will not match the GPS.

The radio has GPS Data In (Green) and GPS Ground.
The GPS has NMEA RX and TX along with GPS Ground (common for radio and GPS).

Any ideas how to hook this up?

Thanks!

Nick

They are comptible. I am replacing the solara I have now. The solara will only send DSC. Can not receive GPS coordinates or store MMSI #'s like in a  built in phone book.

GPS tx to Uniden data in (green)
GPS ground to Uniden Ground

Set output for com port on gps and punch in mmsi # in Uniden.

Wiring goes:

Garmin Black ground to Horizon green NMEA -

Garmin gray to Horizon blue ( I think- The garmin directions suck).

need to read the garmin manual to go into menu to set NMEA output to match Horizon NMEA input.

Fairly straight forward if you have both manuals (easy download).
