9:30am, heading for the canal
« on: October 26, 2007, 09:37:32 AM »
Weather seems to be deteriorating, but I'm going to head to the canal, give it a shot and see if any weakies are around, or if they really moved out. I heard some stripers are being caught in the canal, but supposedly people are being tight lipped about it. Should have a good tide and decent water comditions at 10am for about 3 hours if the rain holds out. I'll report back later.

Fished for 2 1/2 hours solid, through the moving tide to dead water to moving tide again, and did zero, not even a hit. Water clarity was excellent, cabbage was scarce, so conditions were about excellent. All the peanuts and mullet that were there last week are gone, the only bait around is killies and some small spearing. My assumjption is that the weakfish moved out. I haven't seen or heard of a weakie caught there since Monday afternoon, and talked to a few other guys I know there who haven't seen any caught either. Very few bluefish there this week also, I did see 2 small ones caught today, one incidentally by a tautog fisherman on a clam. Talked to a couple of guys I know who fish the blackfish regularly, and they said while the fish are there, this week is slow for blackfish also. High tide was extrememly high, but I'm sure that had nothing to do with the lack of fish. The bait moved out, and so did the predators who feed on them. Water is still a little to warm for stripers to move in yet, although there are a few there, but not enough in numbers and size to start fishing for seriously yet.
