It’s hard to believe I am writing the Labor Day Weeekend Outlook. Summer just flew by this year! I use the same template for Labor Day Weekend as I do for Memorial Day Weekend, and it feels like I just wrote that Outlook, not long ago. However, there is plenty of fishing still to come and a great season still ahead. Weather and Water will be mixed this weekend, again; however, not a washout. High pressure will move offshore, creating a southerly flow as we have seen many times this Summer. It will push a warm front north and then a cold front will come across. This will create unsettled conditions. Saturday will be the best of the three days, with a mix of sun and clouds and minimal, if any chances of rain or thunderstorms. Shower and thunderstorm chances will be possible on Sunday and Monday, at or less than 50%. Some storms on Sunday could be generally strong to severe. High temperatures will be in the 80’s with upper 70’s along the coast. Overnight lows will be 60’s and 70’s with low 60’s across the north for Monday Night. Humidity will be moderate to high as warmer, moist air is pumped in from the South. Water conditions will be borderline most of the weekend and vary by location and time. Between Cristobal influencing waters, changing weather fronts and high pressure offshore, water conditions will be very much a personal call and dependent on where, when and what you are going out on. Saturday will be better than Sunday and Monday. Saturday will be good to borderline, Sunday could approach Cautious with Small Craft Advisories and Monday will be borderline to good. Winds will increase on Sunday with the southerly flow and increase ocean waters wave heights, building to 3-5 feet. Surf conditions will improve, but could continue to be rougher with wave heights averaging 2-4 feet still with Moderate Rip Current Risk, eventually improving to a Low Risk. Water temperatures are steady in the upper 60’s to upper 70’s. UV Index will be Moderate to High.
High pressure will remain over the area on Friday before moving offshore on Saturday. A warm front will move northward through the region on Saturday. A cold front will approach the area from the west on Monday and cross the region on Tuesday, with high pressure building back in by Wednesday.
The remainder of next week will start with showers and thunderstorms for Tuesday and then clear and dry for the rest of the week. Highs will be in the mid to upper 80’s inland and 70’s and 80’s along the coast with overnight lows in the 60’s and 70’s. Humidity will continue to be moderate to high. Water, surf and beach conditions look mostly good. Southern waters and midshore to offshore waters could see some gustier winds and higher seas during the week. The southerly flow will continue through the end of the week before shifting more easterly around Thursday. Surf should settle as well with 1-3 and 2-4 foot waves with Moderate to Low Rip Current Risk.
Cristobal is post-tropical and moving into Canadian waters. There are two areas being watched in the Atlantic Region for possible development. Otherwise, things are quiet again.
Some personal news…I will be moving over the next week or so. We have purchased a house in Manahawkin in the Ocean Acres Section, so I will be moving south! I grew up fishing the Northern Ocean County waters in the Toms River, Barnegat Bay and surrounding Surf. I won’t be far from my normal areas, but I am looking forward to exploring the southern part of Ocean County, especially Barnegat Inlet and LBI Surf.
