Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak
Michael Tirone, a local businessman and regular customer of ours, along with his friends, Curtiss Morgan, Christian Garcia, Mike Lichko, Mark Farmer and Bruce Price chartered the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Winds were out of the west at 10 mph, seas running 2-3 ft. with blue skies and temperatures in the mid 70’s. The request from our guests today was to catch edible fish.
On our way out, we stopped to purchase a dozen live Goggles Eyes from T&T Bait. Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in 120 ft. of water at the sea buoy off of Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore.
We started out trolling with two plainers down, both with double hooked Bonito strips followed by a sea witch. For surface baits we had two Bonito strips and two Ballyhoos. I headed towards one of our artificial wrecks that sit in 200 ft. of water. As I passed over the wreck, the plainer rod bent over while the rod tip bounced up and down, a tell-tail sign that the fish at the other end would be a Wahoo. Curtiss was our angler, and he hopped into the fighting chair to do battle. Fifteen minutes later, Curtiss brought the blue and silver torpedo to the side of the boat where Mark, our mate, had a tug of war wiring the fish; time passed very slowly. Mark gaffed the Wahoo to put the fish in the boat, the fishes razor sharp teeth were snapping side to side, a very dangerous situation. The Wahoo weighed in at 47 lbs.
From there we flew two kites with live Goggle Eyes, but to no avail; so we went back to trolling and wound up with four Kingfish, two Mahi Mahi’s and eight Bonitos for dinner tonight.
All anglers retired into the a/c salon for the ride back to the dock at Bahia Mar, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
