Go to Fluke Hook
« on: April 05, 2015, 08:18:24 PM »
Just wondering what folks use as their fluke hook and why. Since most of my fluking is bucktailing  I had been using standard mustad baitholders hooks 3/0 ~ 5/0 for my teaser hooks (which I catch 90% of my fish on). Then I found these Matzou Swickle Baitholder hooks. They are a forged hooks so they are super strong. Their wide throat leave plenty of hooks exposed after the gulp and strip baits are on so I feel I get good hookups. They are very sharp and they on relatively cheap. I can get a pack of 25 size 5/0 for under 5 bucks on Ebay. But I'm always looking for other ideas.

I've been using the Mustad 5/0 baitholders for teaser hooks on my Bucktails as well. I do like the looks of those hooks you posted Phil, I'm going to give them a try.

For the times that I'm dragging bait, I go with a two hook rig consisting of Mustad 4/0 gold wide gap kahle hooks.
I've spent most of my life fishing, the rest I've just wasted     <'((((><

The 4/0 wide gap kahle hooks work well while dragging bait and have some flashy stuff on the rig like spinners or skirts. I'll admit that they are not very strong.  Yours look stronger t^

I have broken the khale hooks, that why I switched to the baitholders. They are a stronger hook I feel.

At a recent JCAA meeting there was a guest speaker (can't remember his name).  He was a commercial hook and line fluke fisherman that conducted a formal study regarding hook size for fluke.  The point of the whole thing was that larger hooks helped weed out the smaller fish and were more successful at hooking the larger fish.  I think he found 6/0-8/0 baitholders to be the best.
If I can think of his name I'll add it.
