Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Brother and sister, Anna Grinder and Champ Delashmutt along with their children, Courtlan Grinder, age 15, Jackson Grinder, age 11, and Jacob Delashmutt, age 10 and friend Seble Mock all from Virginia chartered the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL.  This is the 4th generation of the Delashmutt family fishing with us, going back to their great grandfather, Charles, who fished with us back in the early 70’s.   Today winds were variable with a gentle breeze of 2 mph out of the east, seas running 1-2 ft., temperatures in the mid 80’s.

Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in 120 ft. of water off of the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore.  We started out trolling with two plainers down, one with a 3 ½ blue reflector drone spoon and the other with a black and blue sea witch in front of a double hooked Bonito strip.  For surface baits we went with Ballyhoos and Bonito strips.

As we trolled the drop off in Fort Lauderdale, our first fish was on one of our plainer rods; Jacob was our angler and reeled in a 9 lb. Kingfish.  From there, all the children took turns reeling in a total of 4 Kingfish and one Bonito.  As I headed towards one of our artificial wrecks that sits in 85 ft. of water, one of the plainer rods bent over and the line screamed off the reel.  My first thought was that I was hooked up with the wreck; however, that was not the case.  Fish On!!!!!  Champ jumped into the fighting chair to do battle.  The tug of war went on for approximately fifteen minutes and Champ was rewarded with a nice 20 lb. Black Grouper.  Unfortunately, we are out of season for Groupers and the fish was returned to the ocean.

The wind picked up enough to put up two extra light kites with two live Goggle Eyes from each kite.  As we sat and talked about the family and all the fishing excursions they have been with me, a black shadow appeared on the right short kite.  Sailfish!!!!!!  Immediately the fish came out of the water and put on a great acrobatic show, showing his brilliant neon colors and power while exiting the water.  Courtlan was our angler and she jumped into the fighting chair.  Twenty-five minutes later, Dave, our mate, wired the fish and brought the Sailfish into the boat for picture taking and release.  This was Courtlan’s first Sailfish, and she did an excellent job reeling him in.

With fish on the menu tonight, it was time to head back.  All the anglers relaxed in the a/c salon for the trip back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
