Just Getting Started
« on: March 03, 2016, 11:05:12 AM »
Hello All, my names Kyle I'm an avid fisherman in Monmouth county and I just recently ordered an Ocean Kayak Prowler 13. I'm eventually looking to fully deck this thing out, however, I dumped a ton of money into proper tackle and gear, the kayak and a roof rack just to transport it. So for now I was looking for some tips from some veterans on what gear you might think is 100% TOTALLY necessary just to get the boat wet and start fishing immediately. (Besides paddle, PFD, wetsuit, and other obvious things). Feel free to throw in some good spots to get started in. I plan on fishing reservoirs, lakes, bays, and conditions permitting the ocean. I've never fished from a kayak before but I am no stranger to the water. Thanks ahead of time for your input.

sometimes things I think are obvious are just obvious to me, so I'll throw this out there:

You will need to purchase a freshwater fishing license for any lakes or reservoirs, and register for the saltwater registry (free) for everything else.

Sorry if that was obvious, there is a ton of discussion on here about it if you need more info.

Hi Kyle,  grtn
I do alot of kayak fishing from salt to fresh.
The statement you made about what do i need is ver wide open.

I would say a net would be a good choice some type of de-hooker to get the hooks out of the fish mouth, fish grips, also not a bad thing a GAF.  would tell you some type of small cooler the little ones that are made of plastic that fold up like a book. just to keep Liquidation in. your call

There is more but i dont want to drown you with things that you know so please write back with any other info and i will do my best to help..

BE SAFE.

Thanks for the responses. I always have my Licenses on me at all times. And good tips Dale those were all the little things i was thinking I would need. However Ive been looking around at launch sites and some require a permit? I also saw on paddle.com or whatever that site is that someone said a fishing license can replace the permit? My plan was just to launch in any water I saw. Like i was just gunna go to union beach, beach front and carry it across the beach. Is that a no no? fngr

Ok here it is in a nutshell
I walk my kayak to any water and Launch, Providing it is open to the public. dont fight when you dont have too.

AS for launching a kayak if you trailer it you have to usualy pay for the trailer access. if they charge.

Leonardo is a prime example. if you rooftop carry your yak park in the main lot walk it to the beach and go. if you have a trailer you have to park in the trailer lot and pay a fee.

Or go to the other side of the ammo pier and launch from BELFORD.

If you get to any of the places before lifeguards etc... there is no one to say no if you go when open they can turn you around.

Long story short Go early watch weekends a lot of idiots in Boats that just don't see us sitting so low in the water. ALWAYS WEAR BRIGHT ASS CLOTHING

Also use GOOGLE EARTH a lot of good palaces to scope out from there to launch for free.

MOST OF ALL PUT ON THE PFD...
LOST A LOT OF YOUNG KAYAKERS LAST YEAR FOR NOT WEARING THERE PFD

that would be a good move  clp

As for getting on the salt yet wait till the action heats up, granted we all have cabin fever badly but you can go out and give it a shot someone has too. also a great way to test out your gear and how you have things set up.

watch what the boat guys are saying when the action starts to light up in the bay go and go strong, remember we can get into the shallow where the boats cant.

Let me know if you decide to go out one day i mat be able to swing a day off.  fcp

was going to go tomorrow but no ne wants to go so i i wll wait.  clp

drop me a PM IL GIVE YOU MY NUMBER

Laurence harbor has an easy access beach with parking lot by Morgan creek.  You can paddle into Cheesequake creek towards the GSP or fish Raritan bay. Lake Lefferts in Matawan is a good spot to fish fresh water. Easy launch and parking too.
