NJ Fishing & Boating Weather Outlook Weekly Edition: August 8-12, 2016

Another mixed week for weather and a week on the water that starts off mixed and ends up borderline to cautious, then cautious right into the weekend. Monday will be dry, with showers and thunderstorm chances for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Showers and thunderstorms will be mainly scattered and some areas will not see anything. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday will have highs in the 80’s with overnight lows in the 50’s to 70’s and moderate humidity. By Thursday, the heat will return with 90’s and overnight lows in the 60’s to 70’s, with even some 80’s at the southern shores. Humidity will be Moderate to High, with muggy and uncomfortable conditions. This will continue through the weekend. Water conditions for rivers and bays will be good for Monday to Thursday and then borderline on Friday. Ocean waters will start off good to borderline on Monday and Tuesday, only for seas to 3 feet or so. Wednesday through Friday will be cautious for winds to 10-20 knots and seas 2-4 feet with 3-4 feet at times inshore and up to 6 feet midshore to offshore. These conditions could be on the low end of the thresholds, or they could be on the upper ends. Conditions could quickly change as well, as winds increase throughout the days. Surf and beach conditions will be good on Monday and Tuesday, then borderline to cautious on Wednesday through Friday. Monday and Tuesday will have surf heights 1-3 feet with light winds and Low to Moderate Risk of Rip Currents. On Wednesday through Friday, winds will increase to 10-20 knots with wave heights 2-4 feet and 3-5 feet on Friday with Moderate to even High Risks of Rip Currents (Low Risks are possible as well). Remember thunderstorms are possible most of the week and could quickly move in or pop-up. Thunderstorms will be capable of heavy rains, dangerous lightning, and gusty winds. Thunderstorms will increase wind and wave forecasts. Also, check Surf Zone and Rip Current Forecasts daily and follow all local beach patrols and lifeguards. Water temperatures are steady in the 70’s and 80’s. Surf temperatures are up to the mid and upper 70’s, pushing the low 80’s in some areas. UV Index will be Moderate to Very High at 4-10/15. 

High pressure is forecast to build from the Great Lakes tonight into the northeastern states for Monday. The high is expected to pass off the coast on Tuesday. A warm front is anticipated to lift through our region on Tuesday night and Wednesday. Another frontal boundary is forecast to settle across southern Ontario, northern New York, northern New England and vicinity for Thursday and Friday. Low pressure traveling along the front may pull the boundary southward and into our region over the weekend.

The weekend will continue those Friday chances of showers and thunderstorms for both days. They will also continue the heat and humidity with mid 80’s to mid 90’s, overnight lows in the 60’s and 70’s, and high humidity. Water, surf and beach conditions will be cautious with winds over 20 knots and seas 4-6+ feet!

The Atlantic Tropics have to areas of invest. One area won’t really develop beyond a low pressure system bringing tropical moisture to the Gulf Coast States, especially Florida, right now. However, it could exit the States and head into the Atlantic, off the Southeast Coast. The second area of invest is out in the Atlantic/Caribbean and will likely track to the north/northeast. These will be something to watch over the next few days. The Pacific is very active with storms into the Baja Peninsula and another close to Hawaii.
