Porgy Fishing
« on: August 02, 2016, 09:02:58 AM »
So I went porgy fishing first time. that was a different experience. for such a small fish they put up one hell of a fight. I should not say small some were as big as 17 inches.  first time I ate porgy too. what a decent tasting fish it is. a bit of work to clean but well worth it.

Dalejam, we had @500 on Saturday with a 10 man crew on Monger. I really haven't fished them as a target species but you're right, they give a good little fight, fun with double headers. Learned about fillets also, cut off the red meat in center, use larger piece for cooking and the opposite side will have a firm smaller piece that is great for making ceviche if you like that. I was told to try with the red meat and w/o. Personally like the taste better with out the red in it,

That is correct just cut that red line out and do what ever with it. that is all bones.

needless to say I did not catch as many as my friends, but my first time out. net time I would like to bring home 30 the limit.

will let you know how I do next time out.

Thank you all for the comments.

I see I have been the one contributing to KAYAK FISHING lately. but I hope people will see it and join in and ask questions.

Dale: Would you mind sharing a rough area? I am heading out in the AM with some friends who just want some action. I was planning on looking for the porgies since they are being caught in good numbers. I was thinking Shrewsberry Rocks or Sandy Hook Reef.

Nice report.

Most areas that hold tog or sea bass have porgies on them now. Depth from 30 to 50' t^
