VHF radio

  Looking for VHF radio. Most of the time would be in bay occasional a few miles off shore. Is hand held good enough? Or isnt even necessary? My Cell phone works in bay area with no problem. hat would be the minimum requirements to look for on a VHF radio?

Def want a fixed mount. Hand held is good for backup. (made that my Hanukkah gift from my little sisters this year)

I do have a Standard horizon matrix (brand new) if interested.

Can also be connected to a GPS to send and receive DSC info. All can send the info now, this can receive another boat (using DSC) their gps position.

It is white and I want black is the reason for the sale.

At the very least, whatever you get (fixed mount), connect it to your GPS to take advantage of the dsc feature.

1 button distress calling and it sends out your gps location to the CG and other vessels with receive capability.

Great if you have young kids (like me).

Cell phones are good for non-emergency situations.  The only problem with them in an extreme emergency, you have to dial the number, wait for someone to answer and then you have communication with that individual only.

With a radio.  Just grab the mike, speak clearly into it your location and nature of distress.  Not only will the CG hear your call but so will many other boaters, hopefully one will be close by and will be able to assist quickly.

Fixed mount over hand held because the hand held has limited range.   Granted, you are in the bay and will probably have plenty enough range, but you will have to keep the battery charged and the radio will have to be with in easy reach to use.  Fixed mount is pretty much install and it's good to go.

me, I have a fixed and use the hand held as backup.(sometimes I forget to take it with me).Match it up with compatible Antenna.A WORKING VHF is a Must on any boat.its your link to others.check em out at all the local stores and see what fits your needs.AJ.

you want a fixed VHF and if you can have it tied in with your GPS to show your lcation when you transmit...this way if you are in trouble the CG has your fix if they can't understand.  Handheld and Cell for backup only
