Fort Lauderdale Fishing with Topshotfishing and Capt. Zsak
Michael McClean and his son, Nicholas, from Maryland made time for father and son bonding and chose to spend this important time fishing with the Topshotfishing team. The McClean’s chose an afternoon charter of deep sea big game sport fishing while in Fort Lauderdale. As the father and son were welcomed aboard by the Topshotfishing team in Fort Lauderdale, the question arose as to what type of fish they were interested in catching. Their response was just to enjoy catching fish and spending time together.
Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock line were in 120 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore. We started off trolling with two #8 plainers down – both with sea witches and double hooked Bonito strips behind them. For surface baits, we went with three Ballyhoos and a teaser.
As we trolled the reefs ranging from 80 ft. out to 180 ft. of water, I zigged-zagged back and forth over the reefs while the anglers took turns catching Kingfish and Bonitos. I marked a good amount of fish on one of the wrecks in 210 ft. of water, so we dropped live bait over the wreck which produced two Amberjacks in the 30-40 lb. class – they were both released. From there I could see a color change forming east of Fort Lauderdale, so I ventured out there and found some birds working the area too in 310 ft. of water. Father and son took turns bringing in their fish ending up with a total of 5 Tunas, 4 Kingfish, 4 Bonitos and 2 Amberjacks.
It was now time to head back to the dock at Bahia Bar located at 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316. The anglers retired into the a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock. At the dock, Michael asked me what restaurant they could go to that would serve their fish – I provided them with this info and Dave, our mate, filet their fish for that night’s dinner.
