Fort Lauderdale Fishing with Topshotfishing and Capt. Zsak

Rob and Gail Meryer from Texas chartered the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  As the Meryer’s boarded the boat, the question arose as to what type of fishing they wanted to do.  Gail replied that they wanted to catch a Sailfish.  With this in mind, we stopped to purchase a dozen live Goggle Eyes from T&T Bait.

Fifteen minutes later, lines were in 120 ft. of water by the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore.  We started out trolling with one plainer down with a 3 ½ blue reflector drone spoon.  For surface baits, we went with three Ballyhoos and two Bonito strips and a dredge teaser.

As we trolled the reefs north of Fort Lauderdale ranging from 75 ft. of water out to 200 ft., the two anglers took turns bringing in their catches and recording the event.  It was now time to see if we could get lucky with a Sailfish.  There was very little current off of Fort Lauderdale so I set up over one of our 34 artificial wrecks located in 145 ft. of water.  We put out two kites with two live Goggle Eyes from each kite and waited for the black shadow to appear.  Right long!!!! As a Kingfish skyrocketed out of the water, cutting the bait in half and swimming away with a free meal.  After resetting, Left short!!!!  There he is – Sailfish!!!  Dorsal and bill out of the water, attempting to catch the frantic swimming Goggle Eye.  Hooked up!!!  Sailfish out of the water as he tail-walked to the south – what a fantastic sight!!!  Gail was our angler and hopped into the fighting chair to do battle with the Sailfish.  Thirty minutes later, Dave, our mate, wired the Sailfish for picture taking and was released to fight again.

With a total of three Kingfish, two Bonitos, one Sailfish and a happy Mr. & Mrs. Meryer, it was time to head back to the dock.   The anglers retired into the a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar located at 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
