Myself and other NJSW members fished off Nantucket island the last two days in pursuit of Doormat fluke. The stars aligned and we were lucky to have great weather. All Stars Paul "Fluke King" Strommen, Danny "FOMF Jigs", and Mark "The Professional" Golden Ball Defender made up the NJSW crew. Anticipation ran quite high and the last few weeks have been a bit of a drag as we awaited this trip. On the night of 6/25 going into 6/26, I could not sleep at all and Mark had similar trouble. This trip has been a few years in the making and we were glad to finally be out there.
On day one, a minute into the first drift, Mark hooked up and landed a 8 1/2 lb fluke which set the tone for the trip. From that point on we never looked back. Shortly afterwards I landed a 10 1/2 lb fluke which was my first DD and PB. On the second drift Danny landed a 9 1/2 lb fluke on one of his jigs, and seconds later I hooked into a 12 lb fluke which is my new PB. Everybody had at least a 7 lb fluke make the deck. God knows how many keepers we caught between the 6 of us. It was at least 100+ no question. At the end of the day, when the Capt said reel em up Mark hooked into and landed his new PB fluke at 11 1/2 lbs which was safely released back into the ocean. It aint over till it's over. It was the last fish of the day, and an exclamation point for an incredible day of fishing I don't think we'll ever forget.
Day two was not the hot bite day one was, but the fishing was still incredible all in all. On my second cast of the day on the first drift I hooked and landed my third DD fluke which ended up being 10 3/4 lbs. Our friend Jeffrey was especially hot and had a bunch of fish go 8-9 lbs throughout the day. We caught probably around 80 keepers, and once again everybody landed at least a 7 lber. It was another great day of fishing with a great crew.
