Potting bill dies without a vote
Tuesday, January 08, 2008
There wasn't a vote cast against it, and not one allowed to be cast for it, as the bill to end potting on the state's artificial reefs was killed when Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts (D-Camden) refused to post it for a vote. Recreational fishermen and divers were sure the bill would pass easily, but Reef Rescue and all the other backers of that legislation will now have to start from scratch in the new Legislature

Received this email earlier from a captain with whom I fish with out of Tuckerton with regards to Assembly Bill A3986

This is issue is far from "over", it is just getting started.  In less than a year's time, the following progress was made -
1)  Getting bills introduced in the Assembly and Senate
2)  Getting those bills through Committee in both legislative bodies
3)  Winning a unanimous vote on the bill in the Senate
4)  In the face of tremendous lobbying and political pressure, coming within a handful of votes of getting the Assembly bill up for a vote.

Also keep in mind that the Dept. of FGW may still go ahead and limit certain potting activities on reef sites.

Nothing good comes easy.  Tremendous progress has been made, and people have played their cards as both allies and enemies in this battle.  The fight will go on.

We need a list of our enemies! So they can be squashed like the bugs that they are.
