Self-Bailing and Self-Righting: USCG 12/4/07
« on: February 06, 2008, 04:24:04 PM »
And it's a good thing....

Large storm swells reached Morro Bay California on December 4, 2007, bringing 15-20 foot swells With some plus sets.  A U.S. Coast Guard 47-foot Motor Life Boat was out for practice maneuvers In the large surf, which is not unusual.  However, a large wave hit that was probably more than They bargained for...   The air was filled with Mist, and they were quite distant, so at times were just a shadow in the mist.

I had that sent to me in an email.  Scarey.

I used to run the 45 foot self righting boat at Barnegat Light CG Station years ago.  Had it over on it's side on the south bar outside the inlet, but nothing near what that boat got into.   TT^

Both fun and scarey at the same time.   w00t

Wow!  That's INSANE!

Coincidentally, I have a friend who is from Morro Bay (moved to NYC wanting to be an actress, ya know  ;D ) and I once went with her back home, pretty much just because it sounded like a cool place.  The Pacific seems so much different from the Atlantic, and I definitely believe those photos.  The waves were absolutely INSANE and they bounce off rocks and HUGE structures all over the place close to the coast.

The "inlet" was more of a "pass," which is seen mostly on the Gulf Coast of Florida, and it led from the bay to the ocean.  The swells right off the pass were huge and talking to my friend's grandfather, who owns a boat and goes fishing often, it's very dangerous.

Just another little fact:  my friend never had a snow day in Morro Bay, but they actually used to have "fog days" where it was too unsafe for school buses and the schools had to be closed.  All in all, a very cool place.

Amazing Photos.  I bet they are still cleaning their shorts.  I don't think anyone can get use to something like that.  WOW!!!

6th photo down.  What is that?  Looks like kelp?

If I owned that vessel, I'd never watch a NOAA forecast again. Got time = go fishing.
