Practical difference between flouro leader & flouro line??
« on: February 03, 2008, 07:31:30 AM »
No experience with Fluorocarbon line sold as larger spools to spool reel with. Plenty with leader material.

What is the practical difference (if any) between a spool of 300yd 30lb fluoro to spool on reel vs. 50 yd spool of 30lb fluoro leader material(aside from price)?

Stiffness.  The fluro line meant for spooling is a softer line. The leader material is a stiffer line designed for abrasion resistance.

Sounds reasonable to me Duff.

Thanks, I just never used the spool on, so not sure what it's consistency was.

April is around the corner, I am going to need your beer order for that weekend :)

Mike, Duff is correct.  It is the stiffness that is the difference.  Here is an article I found from the guy who put ont the Saltwater Fishing Seminar Series.

Sounds good for pitching baits a Mahi, as they are extremely leader shy.

There has been a great improvement in flurocarbon, both in quality and price.  I haven't had too much interest in it yet, but I did pick up Trilene Flurocarbon to fill reels.  The price works out to 10 cents a yard, which is the same as PP.

I still haven't tried it out since I am a 100% braid fisherman.  I do believe in the flurocarbon leaders and I use a 12" shock leader on the end of my braid all the time.

In my opinion there are way too many lines available today, which is good for the consumer, but if you changed lines every trip you still couldn't give them all a shot.

I usually do as well for regualr mono, but have been buying (and paying a lot) for fluoro leader.

I just got a 100 yd spool of 30lb stren tinted fluro on ebay for $27 or so shipped, so not too terrible.

Next is hooks :)

Floro leader is stiffer than floro line. The leader is more abrasion resistant. I use both, but I like the floro line when trying to present a bait a more natural way. Live lining eels or spot for example. The bait is able to move around easier with the floro line. More natural presentation

Capt craig your thery makes sense to me, I would say to use the stiffer leader material when wreck fishing or in a situation when you want the hook to stand out away from the leader such as for Seabass or Blackfish  ???

Interesting side note, when fluro gets scuffed up from abrasion, it actually "glows" more than mono from light refraction of the damaged line.

Saw an underwater video of that, quite interesting.
