Looking at a Newell 220/229/235

looking for a new inshore reel, I've heard some good things about the Newell's. I've handled the 220 and I like the feel. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with them and their opinion on using one as an all around reel. Also what gear ratio would be best. Thanks in advance for your input.

I love my Newell 229 with the 3.6:1 gear ratio for blackfishing and sea bassing  .

I'm pretty sure it is the same as the 220 just that the 229 has greater line capacity.

One thing about the Newells, bring the rod you plan on using it with to the store with you as not all Newells fit on all rod seats.

You are correct, line capacity is the only difference. I was thinking 229 also. Curious as to what gear ratio to go with. Thanks Andy.

5:1 would be better for casting and such, but I plan on using it for bottom & maybe some jigging. 3.6:1 will probably be the one. Then the real fun starts choosing the rod.

For bottom fishing go with the 3.6:1.

For jigging I'd go with another reel.

220 is much easier to "palm" than the 229.  I have both and prefer the 220.  Holds way more than enough line especially if you use braid.

Ratio? In my humble opinion, I don't see all that much difference in the two(5.1&3.6)

On smaller reels like Abu 45/4600 series it does make a big difference, but on the 200 series Newells, not so much to me.  If you can find the 3:1 easily and will be using it for bottom fishing/bait, then go for it.
I use a stock S220 w/ 5.1:1 for my tog'n.

Got to say, I really like my new Avet SX in Blue with multi colored 50lb braid

If you fish braid around structure, ie tog'n, it's a God-send
No dowel needed, no worries about wrapping the braid around something to pop out/free...throw the switch, point rod straight towards snag, and POP!

#1 reason I can't get the other Shimano OJ away from Theresa.  She said she loves that feature.
