Preferred crabbing methods

What method do you prefer to use when crabbing?   

Handlining?   Collapsable traps?   Baskets?   Commericial traps?    Scapping?   

What is your favorite bait?    Why?

I haven't done much crabbing but with my newly aquired time off, I would like to do some this year, along with some clamming.

I'm looking forward to the answers that the guys come up with, so I can give them a try.

drop lines off a boat, a sure fire way is using the Maryland traps over night.

I prefer handlines w/ chicken wrapped in womens stockings (no I'm not kidding    )

My son prefers traps. Easy to pull and he gets to watch the crabs run around in them. In the traps go bunker heads with eyes removed (another long story)

3 commercial Maryland Traps left over night with markers.

Bunker is my first choice.  I also was taugh old school, to use women stocking filled with fish scraps.  The stockings help hold the scraps togeter and its also more difficult for the crabs to let go due to the legs getting caught in the stockings.

I put 26 wonderful years in on my job.  Now, I have aquired a full time OFF schedule.  As in, like Luna said, RETIREMENT.

I got 13 1/2 years left to retire.. 49 1/2 with full pension.

 Placed closed down where I worked after 25 years.
I was 50 then. Worked on and off till I was 57. Both my parents passed away in 2007. Both in their mid 80's. Left me and my brother with a nice inheritance. Now I dont have to work. Have 2 homes for sale one in Phillipsburg, NJ and other in FT pierce Fla.

What's the record for hi-jacking a thread? 

Give me low tide, flat bottom boat and a scoop net.  Use to fill up garbage cans back in a day.  It's getting better now too ....

I can remember we used spot lights to lure then in at night on the docks in Seaside Park.  Pretty cool and no sunburn.

Night crabbing and very early morning crabbing usually yields the best results with tides being equal.

I prefer handlines for recreation.    Nothing is better than finding a decent spot, turning on the Phillies game on the radio, and tossing out the handlines.

I do put out my maximum of two Chesepeake style traps off my dock and check them/refill them every day during the season, though. Afterall, you can never have too many cleaned, halved and frozen crabs put away for spaghetti sauce to get you through those cold, crabless winter months.
