HANDHELD VHF RADIOS..

  I'M considering a handheld vhf raido,as
a back up on solo runs. Looking at the standard
horizon HX471S mini submersible.

ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS UNIT..

its nice to have as a back up, but you won't get the same range as you would with the mount one.

I have a SH cp1000 gps/FF setup and will be installing a new SH VHF fixed mount in a few weeks.

I like SH products, there support is great (3 year warranties and you get an english speaking person on the phone or via email very quickly).

I am not familiar with that model, but wouldn't be hesitant about purchasing any of there products.

That being said, I have a rather inexpensive ($45 or so on ebay) midland hand held as a backup which should work fine for what I need it for.

If your budget allows for a moer expensive one, no reason I wouldn't chose that SH.

Thank's Guys for the input. I have 2 fix mounted units aboard already, my thoughts for
this topic was in case I was out on a solo inshore run.
and God forbid I go over board , there may be
some one in the area to receive my DSC call.

Just wondering how good these units may be
in a case like this.

The DSC feature needs to have the unit physically connected to your gps (much like a fixed mount) via the supplied cradle, so in your scenario of falling overboard, the DSC feature will not work. It has to be sitting in it's cradle (and nmea wires connected to your GPS nmea wires for that feature to work.
It does not have a built in GPS receiver which would be needed for it to do DSC/w position.

You can still use the DSC function, but it will not provide any gps info (which negates the purpose of DSC IMO).
