Striper opener with Capt Ron
« on: April 07, 2008, 09:38:17 AM »
After months of waiting the day finally arrived. It was time to go fishing. I was up at 4 to check the weather and  to see who was coming. The weather looked good and the Shrimpman stayed up all night and was on his way. I saw that Roco also was awake and heading down so I jumped into the car. I think the weather scared alot of people yesterday because the boat only had 25 fares. There was a bunch of board members there and we talked about how glad we were to be going out on the water and how long the winter was. The Capt headed up the bay and made the first drop around Keansburg on some bait readings. One skate come over the side after around an hour so we went hunting. We tried going closer to the beach and had similar results. We went toward Staten Island and finally Tom had a hook up. It turned out to be a nice 4lb plastic bag. It put up a good fight but Tom brought it over the side. It was time to move again towards Great Kills and it was Tom going back into action. After another fine fight a 3ft stick came on board. Tom was really getting back into mid season form quickly. That was all the action there so we headed back toward Keyport. By this time the Shrimpman was worn out and had headed to nap land. Mate Chris took over his pole and promptly landed the first game fish of the day, a 12" flounder. Robbie took it and put it on the Shrimpmans chest. This got him up and back into action. The only striper of the day was caught towards the end of the trip and it became clear that you had to have your pants tucked into your pants to catch a fish. The Shrimpman threatened to follow that lead. All in all it was a great day on the water with alot of laughs. It was good to see old and new friends and as usual Capt Ron gave 110%. Better times are coming. I am having trouble down loading the pictures and will try to get them onto the site tomorrow.
