Point pleasant canal & Manasquan Inlet 4/22
« on: April 22, 2008, 04:02:45 PM »
Did a little scouting this morning over at the inlet. Stiff north winds negated using anything other than some heavy metal. Blues seem to have left, as fast as they came in yesterday. Spoke to a gentleman who got into them yesterday, he said they were big, hungry and fought hard. I watched several fisherman for a while, and nobody was doing anything.

Went over to the canal about 11, fished a rod with bait(alternated between whole clam & peanut bunker), while casting a Fin-s & Long A Bomber on the other rod. Trying to see if there were any blues, weakies or stripers around, I didn't do a thing, fished till 3pm. Water is very clear on the incoming tide, a fair amount of cabbage in the water, but liveable. A little colder than I'd liike to see it also. Don't have a thermometer, but when I dip my hand it, it just feels to cold to me. Couple of guys fishing for flounder caught a few flounder, no keepers that I saw, and a few blackfish, 2 were 15 inch keepers. Sandworm was the bait of choice. May go back to the inlet in an hour or so if the wind lays down and see if maybe the blues will come charging in later this afternoon.

Good report, thanks. The water will be warming up quickly if this weather holds.

Son and I went back to the inlet around 5PM. Couple of guys told us they murdered the blues there from 2PM to 4PM(figures), then it died out. Son caught one on around his sixth cast, using a Bomber Long A, silver with a blue back. Not quite as large as the fish that were described to me as being caught, but nevertheless, a nice fish on light freshwater tackle.

No more action till we were ready to quit, when I caught one a little smaller than my sons. His fish slammed it, mine didn't it hard at all. I was using a one ounce Cordell spot, working it throughout the water column, but when the blues come in, they seem to be right on top, and plugs are working much better than metal. The fish are around, you just have to be there at the right time, when the fish are running in & out, and I seem to be missing the right times, LOL.

Alex's Bait & Tackle confirmed that a bunch of blues were caught between 2pm and 4pm, they also report the water at the inlet being 45 degrees, still a little cold yet, but it's starting.

Nice blue!  Hope this doesn't mean the winter flounders will be getting on outta here, though.

Talked to a buddy who went out of PA today and only 1 flounder on the boat....also heard that the local PB's did not do well either and some of the boats trying the Cedars did not find them.
