How do I find the bunker?
« on: May 28, 2008, 08:39:06 PM »
Okay, so I learned how to throw my cast net. I have a 9' net with 1" openings.  Now can someone help me with actually getting bunker in the net?  I basically looked for some breaking the surface, boated over and threw...nothing.  I heard of guys running in a circle before they throw the net, is this something I should be doing?  Any help is really appreciated.

Welcome to the site.

Where are you fishing North?  South?

Using your fish finder and looking for breaking water are probably your best bet's.  If you tell us where you are fishing from, someone could direct you to a hot bunker location.

I launch out of Atlantic Highlands. I have heard that the bunker have been in Great Kills, but I am not familiar with that spot so I stuck to what I knew.

welcome to the site.. no need to look any further..the bunker are right under you at the AH marina.  Look for that occasional splash and even though it may look like 1 swirl, there will be a school under them.  Just be patient, watch the water and the fish finder.  You also have to wait for them to gather, so if there are many boats heading out, it will spook and separate the school, so just wait till they gather again.  It may take an hour, or 1 throw, depending on how lucky you get.

You can try throwing the net then circle it with the boat.  Sometimes this works.  Just watch out for other boats that are close to you.

this actually doesn't work as much as some people might think.  Trying to coral them is just a waste of time and can be dangerous to other boaters.  Just find them and throw.  There is no need to make it any more difficult then it already is.

I watched a guy throw and circle and come up with 3 bunker.  I wait, watch, wait and watch again and in 1 throw you got 30-50.

remember stealth is the key. they get spooked easily.try to glide into them with the motor off or get in front of the school as its moving and let hem come to you . good luck
