Got a little late start today but headed out of Sewaren around 9:30 with two buddies from work.Headed over to GK and just before we got there we saw birds working.Told my one buddy let's go over and jig under the birds for bass.He say's let's go get bunker first then come back.Getting bunker all the way in the back of GK was a little time consuming to say the least. With the bunker in small schools and being down deep we had no luck with the net so it was a snag fest until we got what we needed.Of course while heading out of GK all bird activity was over. I'll never listen to my buddy again. Headed over to OO and nothing happening went further east and still nadda.Headed over to the Verazzano with nice marks but no takers.Covered more area of raritan bay than I care to admit and not even a blue fish. Tried whole bunker, bunker heads, bunker chunks, trolling Rapala X-Raps.The wind was kicken the heck out of us in my little 17 foot CC and after 4 hours of nothing we were a little cold,a lot wet and pretty much ready to give up. Was on our way back to Sewaren ramp when I made a last ditch drop on some marks near the 47 can and managed to salvage the day with a 29" striper. Weird though, had a live bunker on while drifting, felt a blue hitting the bait again and again but just could not set the hook on him. Got tired of playing so I took the reel out of free spool and turned the clicker off and stuck the pole in the holder. Not a minute later the pole's got a nice bend in it. Thought I finally hooked that blue but when the fish came up it was a striper and the only thing left of the whole bait was the head. Taking tomorrow off to avoid the opening day flukeathon but plan on being back out on sunday. Saw a poor guy back at the ramp with a small boat on a trailer sorta. Looks like they pulled the boat on the trailer and drove across the street to get out of the way of the ramp. Don't know why but the whole back of the trailer bent just behind the wheel and the back of the boat was sitting on the ground. Felt bad for the guy and have no idea how he was going to get that boat home. Not many boats out there today. Guess everyone was a bit smarter than I was......
