Point Pleasant Canal 5/31

Hit the Canal this morning, was fishing by 4:45Am. I thought it would be a good morning, because of the storm coming, but was slower than expected.

Tide was to early, but fortunately, the incoming tide was quite mild, and very fishable. Caught a 23 1/2 inch striper at 5:20AM, and it went downhill from there for me, LOL. About a half hour later my friend caught a 28 1/2 inch keeper. Both fish were caught on Fin-S fish in Arkansas Shiner finish. Thats all we did, one fish each, but I'm not complaining, by any means.



So I continued fishing up by the 88 bridge through the switching tide, and did nothing else. Boat traffic was extremely light also, I assume due to the weather report, but the fish still didn't cooperate. It started to rain, and I figuered I'd walk to the mouth of the canal, if no bluefish were around, try for a striper there. Then it poured, and got soaked walking the 150 yards back to the truck. It quickly stopped, so I dried my hair off and headed towards the mouth of the canal.

Tried a plastic shad, and no bluefish, so I put a Fin-s on, and a bluefish bit it off. Went back to the shad and caught one. Switched to a Ava 17 with a green tail, and caught half a dozen of em. Was a slow bite, but I figuered the wind would dry me off, so I hung around. Blues are there, but not hitting like they have been, I must have had a dozen hits on the Ava that I couldn't hook them, like they were playing with it, but all in all, a good day.

I saw Captain Allen of the Reel Class and his charter fishing the mouth of the canal. I didn't get there till 8:15, but they did appear to be catching blues, hopefully he'll report later.

I must say, Captain Allen is a class act, respectfull of the guys casting from land, and still putting his charter on fish. He was careful to stay beyond casting distance of the bank fisherman, unlike many of the inept boaters that fish there, I tip my hat to him.

Fished the canal after the thunderstorm this afternoon till dark, didn't do a thing with the stripers. When I first got there, birds were going nuts at the mouth of the canal, so I think it's a safe assumption that the blues are still feeding there. I went up towards the 88 bridge.

Water was crystal clear, minimal cabbage in the water, even when running hard. Tons of rainfish in the water all along the walls of the canal. Boat traffic was minimal also, so I thought the stripers would feed, but nope, hopfully tomorrow morning. Did get a few blues, but they just seemed to be passing through, not hanging around like at the mouth of the canal.
