Late Thursday Report
« on: July 04, 2008, 05:44:14 PM »
Yesterday was a long day and obviously not a keeper day or I would have stayed up to tell you about it.  It was a windyyyy day.  I was joined by Mboy who wanted to get an early start and check out the striper bite before fluking.  I picked him up at 3:30, extended stay at Quik Chek, don't ask, bait store, load boat, in water at 5:30, bunkered up and on way at 5:50. Cleared the Hook at 6:15 and knew we were in trouble.  Large swells, waves and wind.  It was impossible to read surface bunker activity so we looked for birds working.  Found some near the Highlands bridge and sent a couple of livies over the side to see if there were any striper's around.  No action except one light run off with a bunker returned with lip marks but no teeth.  After chasing the birds for an hour we decided to head to the rocks, still looking for birds, and fluke in the deep area.  Found only six boats anchored up at rocks but did not see any fish being caught.

Fluke rigs in water and a fast drift with the wind blowing..  Tried drifting from the rocks north. No hits, no fish. After an hour we decided to move into the beach. Drifted a couple of areas as we were pushed north by the wind.  Finally found some fish around Sea Bright and drift from the surf out, back in, drift out over and over again.  caught plenty of fluke up to last years size limit, skates and a few robins.  Drifted all the way to the first bathing beach catching and releasing.  Checked out the striper boats by the bridge but they were not doing anything when we passed.

Decided to run up to the hook and try some drifts as Ambrose would be too rough and fast given the wind and tide. Tried a few drifts and caught a few small fluke but the speed of drift required 8oz not a nice way to fish.  Figured the Shrewsbury channel would be better so off we went.

Tried several drifts across the first marina into channel.  Had to dodge the ferry and boats going to the fireworks in Red Bank.  No fish but a lot of lettuce. Headed over to the breakwater at AH and drifted the channel at the north end.  Fish on right away and on every drift but no legals!  After dodging another ferry, returning and leaving party boats plus numerous private boats we decided to call it a day and let the wind continue to blow.

Returned to the ramp and took the boat out.  Talk at ramp confirmed our experience yesterday.  Everyone said many shorts, no keepers and too much wind.  One boat was on the water at 5am and was able to put 5 keepers in the box real early taking them between 14 and 16 in the Reach channel first thing in the morning.  Unfortunately there is nothing you can do for the wind.

Cleaned boat, two people cut the time in half, put everything away and headed home.  The traffic even cooperated.  Dropped Mboy off at his house, met his best catch, Fishinfool and headed home.  Great day of fishing with a fellow site member, thanks for your help yesterday Mike, we will have to do a keeper trip some time when you are in charge of the weather.

Great report, sounds like a good day, despite conditions, good company, and you had action, even if it was shorts, certainly better than getting the skunk.
