Squan Inlet bulkhead report.
« on: August 07, 2008, 12:02:32 PM »
One for the books, last night. The number of fish caught was not very flattering, but the sheer number of fish in the inlet was amazing.  I arrived around eight oclock and walked about 1/2 way out on the north jetty and started casting my gulp pogy 3" for shad, hooked one but couldn't land him. Scattered jumpers.  Just as the sun's light was totally fading to darkness, fish started busting all around on spearing.  Darkness drove me off the rocks onto the bulkhead, where i witnessed spearing so thick you could feel them on your line.  my swivel snap was opened(accidentally), and i Snagged one on the end of the open snap!!! landed afew more shad and a 4-5 lb bluefish.  I witnessed a 32-38 inch striper cruise through the spearing no more than two feet from the wall, but the vnerves got the best of me and i never got a good cast at him.  Regtrettably, i caught no more shad (if i had, i would have livelined one for on of those big bass.)  As i said, and amazing sight.  I met a gentleman who told me about a 14.5 lb weakfish he caught in the waves on the North side of the rocks.

BTW, saw a 15-ish lb Cow nosed ray caught on the rocks in the morning

Nice report!!  Good to see the Inlet itself has a little more action than the begining of the summer.  It really is a very convenient place to fish!!

Nice. Lotsa bait usually means lotsa predators. Good job on the ones you caught. It's tuff not to get the jitters when a big bass comes cruising by.  TT^

I agree.  Specially us amateurs!  You get all excited and mess up.  It is so much easier when you don't see the fish and don't expect it.
