Sea Hawk fluking 8-20
« on: August 20, 2008, 05:27:58 PM »
Bob Cole wanted to cash in on the free fishing trip on the Sea Hawk that he won at our party in the spring. So Bob Cole, BobG, Maurice and I  packed our gear and headed to

We arrived at Perth Amboy before the gate was open for the dock. We put our gear in line behind the gear already lined up by other fishermen. When the gate was opened we boarded the Sea Hawk and claimed our spot on the rear, starboard corner area, with Sal, a twice weekly patron already claiming the corner itself.

By 6:30 the boat was three quarters full. A few more fishermen filled in some spots along the rail and we were underway shortly after 7.

Our first top was in the Raritan Reach Channel. Several shorts were quickly boated and released.

We made several moves, finding a lot of short fish and a minimal amount of keepers. We then steamed to the Ambrose Channel. Drifts were made in several sections of the channel. Some spots produced better than others, as is always the case in fishing. Captain Mike power drifted through out the day when necessary to keep the boat on the channel edge.

The catching picked up near the end of the trip, with more keepers being boated. Captain Mike stayed out longer than usual to put together a decent catch for his patrons.

Although it was not a slaughter today, most on board came home with fish for the dinner plate. No monster fluke were caught either. Bob Cole was the pool winner with a fluke that went over three pounds.

I can honestly say that the Captain and crew on the Sea Hawk put in a hard day of work. We moved when the bite slowed and redrifted spots where we had a decent pull of fish. The mates kept a fresh supply of bait going and where there when needed to net or unhook a fish and undo a tangle. The spearing provided by the boat was the best spearing I have seen in many years. They were large and of good quality.

I would recommend this boat to anyone who wanted to fish out of Perth Amboy. Plenty of parking, great captain and crew and a clean boat, well maintained boat.  t^

While we were making a move I saw a boat with a familiar name attached to the side.

Great report Joe--I could not have done it as well because you had the camera.
The Sea Hawk was a top quality boat to fish and all of the baits were fresh and large.
I would highly recommend the boat to all.

Glad you guys enjoyed yourself. TT^

I heard from Capt Mike during the day and he was beating himself up that the fishing was way too slow.

Sal, good old salt that has some amazing stories of cod fishing back in the day.  I know his wife was very sick the last I saw him.

He does have some nice spearing t^

Yeah Mickey, it was a slow pick, but that is not the captain's fault. I think he moved when appropriate, re-drifted when we had fish in an area and made a big move to Ambrose Channel.

I was right next to Sal all day, good guy.  TT^
Apparently his wife is doing better now.

And the spearing was outstanding.

Good boat and crew, now I know why you like the boat. Tell them not to change a thing.  t^
