Medical Waste Washing up on NJ Beaches!!
« on: August 29, 2008, 03:53:34 PM »
Seems with the strong east winds the last few days, there is lots of garbage in the surf and washing up on the beaches.  Several NJ Beaches from Cape May through Monmouth County have closed due to medical waste and hypodermic needles and syringes.  As well, there is just a lot of garbage and jellies in the surf.

BE CAREFUL on the beaches if you venture out there to do any surf fishing.  Syringes have been found without needles, capped with needles and uncapped with needles.

It is a shame to have to post about this topic, but it happens nosmly!

Yeah, I had to tell my daughter the other day to be careful and it really is a shame that in this day and age we are still having trouble with this problem.

Why can't they make a device that not only de needles the syringe but smashes the glass or plastic as well.  5hrug

They do have a home device that "snips" the needle off of the syringe.  The plastic could be melted down.  For private homes, they tell you to put your needles in a metal coffee can and tape it up shut and then mark it needles.

I think this waste that is washing up is illegally(or maybe legal in some states) dumped medical waste.  It costs a lot of money to pay to have medical waste disposed.  It is probably 2 or 3 times(or more) expensive than regular garbage to have carted and dumped.

What is more sad is that it is easy to illegally dump or that somewhere it is legal to dump garbage in the ocean.  I thought we were over that issue many, many years ago.  Are we going to have to watch for garbage slicks and "packs" of garbage like they have to watch for "packs" of ice in the Bering Sea??

Apparently the person who dumped the medical waste was a dentist and it was from his office!  It was dumped in Townsend Inlet.  He supposedly admitted to doing so.  I just hope he was the one and not being blamed for a more serious incident that is being "overlooked," shall we say.  Seems like a lot of wash up from one small dentist dumping one time.  I heard that not only was it syringes, but some towns had vials of blood and urine samples.  Whether that was rumor or not, who knows 5hrug?  If that is true, what is a dentist doing with vials of blood and urine??
