8-7 fluking At Sea Girt Reef
« on: September 08, 2008, 02:40:35 PM »
Headed out of Manasquan at 3pm, spent 3.5 hours and got one 20 inch fluke to show for it. Lots of nibbles, one bite off, and 2 lost spros. Hate losing all those rigs at the reef. The Jamaica 2 was maybe 1 mile south of the reef, several small boats around him. Didn't get a thing there, so I kept on at the southern part of thje reef. What was the Jamaica fishing there for? If it was the ACX reef, nothing on the chartplotter to indicate it. Beautiful day, last day at least I got a keeper.

Great effort. Nice to at least get a keeper on the last day of fluke season.  t^

Nice report and good job with the last keeper of the season

there is other stuff on the bottom that isnt on the chartplotter or part of any reef

wrecks and rockpiles galore to the east and south of sg reef.

The Jamaica 2 report was that they caught a 10.3lber (biggest of the season) and had lots of bites on 9/7. i wasnt there but thats what i read.

lots of wrecks and small rockpiles that are not on charts or reefs sometimes have better fishing. sometimes dont.

but provide the same time enviorment or better than the reefs and have been on the bottom a lot longer

The spots Capt Jerry is speaking of will often be better than the reef as they have less pressure on them.  TT^

Hey guys (Joe and Jerry), how do you know that area just south of the SGR is rocky/ has wrecks? Did someone just tell you or can you tell by the fishfinder? Glad the Jamaica 2 did well yesterday, but I just didn't get a bite there at all. I assume this is not the AC reef, correct? Thanks!

DJ there are 2 good books available through "The Fisherman Magazine" the first is
" Saltwater Fishing Guide" which has a lot of good gps numbers in it broken down into areas of the NJ coast, the second book is " A Guide to Fishing and Diving New Jersey Reefs" This book has all the NJ reefs broken down and the gps numbers for the wrecks and rockpiles for each reef.  t^

you are correct not ac reef they were prob fishing broken bottom and wrecks between the 2 reefs.

I have been fortunate enough to have some good #S passed on to me from older capts. Mostly loran but i then find them with loran and save into chart plotter.

But you can tell from the depth finder when over it

Some good books out there though, and some you will stumble along. sometimes it might only say rky on you chart plotter.

Lot of thoses pieces have been acting like artificial reef for hundres of years.

Check out divebooks books. Very accurate and detailed information.

The klondike and england banks are prime examples of natural bottom spread over a large area acting like reefs.

Small low lying pieces often produce the best fishing for most species.

Capts used to dump their own stuff over the side years ago before reefs. aka Dumps Hard to get any #s on them but still produce to this day.

you will like the divebooks t^ t^

Along with a little bit of luck to find your very own spots.  t^

Run around an area long enough and you will find them.

Also, keep an eye where others are fishing and catching. You don't have to hit that spot when they are there, just catalog it in your mind or on your chart plotter and go back later to see what the attraction was for them to be there. MANY a good spot is found just by doing that. Not hordeing in on other's spots, just making the best of a good situation.  t^
