Bluefishing Blitz this Morning Sun 9/7
« on: September 07, 2008, 12:29:25 PM »
Heard reports that the bluefish started to blitz the beaches this morning.  Had some off of Joey Harrison's in Ortley and between the Piers in Seaside Heights.  Unknown if any where caught, but they were there in numbers, birds working, etc!!  Also heard the surf is still BIG!  3-5 ft breakers and heavy, heavy undertoe.  So if you can put up with that and get out, give it a shot.  Best surf action I have heard of in a while.  Of course, guess where I am.  Home on child duty!  BUT, if this is the begining, there is only more great action to come!!

**Also, looks like first sign of mullet is being picked up in the Ocean.  Has the Fall Run begun?????

Seems like the surf has settled down a bit from earlier this morning judging from the live feed webcam in SSH.  Waves were high and rough this morning, but look much more calmer.  Might be a great day to get some action in the Surf.

If you go, Good Luck!!

Thanks for that report P-man!  I'm off tomorrow.  Maybe I can find a couple of hours to hit the beach.  Wouldn't mind wrestling some gators to the beach! ;D

As far as the mullet run.  Yes it could be starting.  Usually, the more noticeable start is after the full moon in September.

Anyone know what actually starts the mullet run out of the Bay.  Is is the moon, tides, etc...that actually causes them to go??

The first full moon in September is what triggers them.

I think it is a combination of everything.  Water temp, moon, tides (which are effected by the moon), and barometer.  If the pressure is low the predator fish will have the feed bag on as well.

Like I mentioned I think it is a combination of everything.

My past experience and logbooks tell me the mullet run has nothing to do with phase of the moon, water temp., etc etc - It has everything to do with length of day, Typically, (over the last 14 years) the run has been full bore the last full week of September - we'll get dribs and drabs scooting out the inlets a lil earlier, but the main blast usually happens after the 3rd week. I've been taking one of my vacation weeks  the last week in September for 14 years and catch more bass (all on plugs) than any other time of the year.
