Shimano Stradic 6000FG??
« on: September 18, 2008, 06:20:12 PM »
Yay or nay??  Any opinions on this reel.  It is the older Stradic from 2001 or so.  It was just given to me and I was told to keep it and fish with it or try and sell it off.  It has definite cosmetic wear, but it seems 100% functional.

Thanks

Definitely a nice reel.  Congratulations on the freebee! t^

My suggestion would be to fish with it for the rest of the season and then send it back to Shimano in California for maintenance.  They will strip it down, relube and replace all worn parts.

Unless you are very experienced with working on these reels, I would suggest that you leave all the maintenance to them.  If you want to just open it up to add lube or anything, don't take the main gear out.  If you take it out and don't put it back exactly the same way, the gears may not feel as smooth when you reassemble it.

Good luck with your new toy! ;D

Thanks Bob!  It was given to me by my father.  He really isn't saltwater fishing any longer and broke the rod that it was on.  So, he is really good with keeping it clean and lubed.  He said it was all oiled and lubed for this season, but never got used.

I will follow your recommendation and I will use it through the Fall/Winter Season and then send it back for them to give it a good servicing.

Thanks for the info...I knew you would know good or bad!!  Solves the problem of needing a new reel for now...still shopping for a rod ;)!

Thanks for all the input!  It is going on my surf rod...I was going to wait to get a new rod, but now that I was gifted a reel, I might need to get the rod earlier than I was planning!
I was going to try it out today, but forget that...
