Reel Class Mixed Bag 10/9 (3-Run Home Run...)
« on: October 09, 2008, 06:41:04 PM »
...not quite the Grand Slam - 1 striper short!

Had Chris "Crabcake" T. and Bluefish Steve aboard today for an open trip.

Started out close to home since it was cranking SSW, so started w/ the tog.  Got an OK pick going, but the fish were small, although we were able to scratch out our 3 keepers to 15".  Fish were biting weird, kinda scratching at the baits, not hammering them.  Fish were spread out a bit.

Finally ran up the beach at around 9 once the wind turned W, got into some heavy, but very concentrated birdplay w/ cocktail blues working over rainfish and sandeels.  Had to bounce around a lot, N, S, offshore, inshore; covered some ground, and boated around a dozen in the 3-5# range.  Just a pick, it was tough fishing.

Got into some small, concentrated marks back to the N of the inlet, dropped jigs on em', and lo and behold, we had weakfish!  We had a real good pick going for a while on tail-less AVA 27's, just hopped off the bottom, nailing weakfish in the 4" - 4# range.  Once the jig bite dropped off around noon, we put sandworms on, and continued to catch.  Easily boated 3 dozen fish (shorts and keepers), had our 3 man limit (kept I think 16 for the table), and mixed in with the yellowfins were porgies, fluke, seabass, and spotted hake.  Steve nailed a nice 19" or so fluke on a jig, man that hurt to toss it back!

Called it a day at around 2, but we left em' biting.  Wound up with a box full of meat!   ;D

Thanks guys, just spoke to a few guys they couldn't find the weakfish today, but the bottom stuff was still pretty good, more porgies today.

You can't resist pouring salt on the wound, can you?....... ;).

Nice smorgasborg of fish  t^.

Guess someone preferred to eat bluefish over weakfish.

Just a head's up, I plan on bringing a multitude of rods for our trip in several weeks so make sure you have enough rod holders.

Doc that's no problem, we can suffice  TT^ The bluefish went to some of Chris's co-workers who love fresh fish, those 3-5# are perfect eating size although you can't get any meat outta the cheeks.
