Tides look good too!  Hopefully it will be good 5hrug?  Today would have been great with the quick drop in the barometer and the cool temps last night, but the winds are out of the south and west.  I have heard of bass being caught in the surf this morning and afternoon still, all on plugs.

I scoured the surf today all at low tide, really just finding spots, but I didn't see or hear of anything from bay head down to Ortley 5hrug

I have been really busy so I have not been out at all since the weekend.  I was thinking of going over tonight if it does not rain we'll see.

I just received an e-mail from another board that is circulating a correspondence that was received about the commercial fishing up in the Cape Cod area where the main fishing right now is herring and haddock but the problem is the byproduct.   The byproduct is stripers.  It has been documented that there was a 3 mile long line of stripers belly up as these guys had no use for them and discarded them over board.  The hidden problem here is that these discarded fish are not factored into their catch rate for stripers.  I just don't understand the screwed up way things are done in the fish management world.

So if the catrch this year is lower once again you can blame the commercial fishing fleet with getting away with another atrocity.

Paul,

Are the commercial guys allowed to keep them up there?  Not that I'm defending them.  But if they're not able to keep the stripers, what other option do they have other than to throw them back dead or alive? 5hrug

I understand that part but they should have to have them added to their catch rate and not just get a by on the totals which skews the bio mass readings something fierce.

It is similar to the throwing back of all the fluke knowing it will die anyway what a waste.

From my understanding, this was beyond the 3 mile line out, so they are not allowed to catch them at all!  Apparently, these 100+ fish were bycatch.  Even if it was within 3 miles, I think the entire East Coast requires stripers to be taken on line, not netted or trawled, etc...  There is no way they should have such a high mortality rate.  From what I read, these fish were possibly suffering from decompression problems(over inflated air bladders), which is why they were belly up!!  Either way, it is a shame and so close to spawning.  What is worse, is that this is not an uncommon occurrence!

Something does need to be done at a higher level.  It is a waste of fish!!

Just shows how screwed up the regulations really are. A good set of regulations would take into account incidents such as this.

If only the regulators had a clue.  nosmly

Can someone please EMAIL me the video and what ever else literature we have on this.

My LT. and Chief at Station Atlantic City are both die hard fishermen. I emailed them both already and basically asked what can be done on a federal level. I mean, the us coast guard enforces federal fisheries.
I will post up a responce. I just hope it is a good one!
