Thinking of getting another boat, what do you think?
« on: October 29, 2008, 05:32:10 AM »
I am thinking of picking up a second boat just to keep down at the water. It is a 1987 23' Wellcraft Coastal walk around with a 1998 Johnson 225 on the back.

Anyone know anything about this boat as far as what I should look for when I go look at it? I just want a boat I can leave on the water, handle the seas at the hook and stay dry.

Thanks for the help
Rick

Rich,

Biggest thing I can say is "IT IS A BUYERS MARKET"  be sure of what you want and what you are getting.

Go over the boat from the keel up.  Wellcraft  makes a good boat, not a big Johnson fan.

Take your time and don't get all hot in the pants over a specific boat.

My other boat is an 2007 18 1/2 feet. Sometimes it is a little small. Just thinking might want something a little bigger. The guy want $6000.00 for it. He is willing to trade my motorcycle trailer and $1000.00 for it.

is that the boat in the pic? or is that your boat ? It sounds like he is acting a little to fast to dump it . What kind of trailer do you have . I got a 2008 10' vnose that I carry my carpets in. I love it and you might miss yours if you trade it in.

That is his boat. I only use the trailer for my sons go cart racing that we don't do anymore. So I don't need it.

That boat is well worth the Money.. IMO...   I would do a compression test on it first..  then I would knock the 1,000 down to 500..  sounds like he just wants a little cash in the pocket  t^

You will be in heaven on that boat coming from the one you have.. been there.. doing that t^

Knocked him down 2G's already. I have all winter to rebuild if I have to or just a water pump and use it next year. If it goes down, o well still have a backup boat.

Diesel, I have seen a few  of the 23ft Coastals on the water this past Season.Qwners were good with them. Wellcraft made a nice boat. The motor is going on 11 yrs old    5hrug    and as Hot Rod said and I'm sure you will do a compression test. Is it a one owner boat, or has the boat been sold around.Does the owner have any repair or maintenance records. You have the knowledge to make any repairs if need be.......  Good Luck  AJ

Thanks guys!

I will do a compression test. If it fails, who knows. Might still buy it. It will give me something to do over the winter. I will just rebuild it. It is one owner and he says it runs like a champ  5hrug  Might throw a water pump and a tune up and run it next year.

Like I said, if it dies, it's not the end of the world, just use the backup boat.

I just didn't know about the boat. Sounds like it's a good boat.

Just thinking of getting a slip for the summer with a less $$$$ tied to the dock and still be able to sleep with the boat an hour and a half away and storms hitting the coast.

Welcrafts are very good boats.  I had the 23' CC version.

Fish out of Toms River NJ.

Go for it!!  remember.  when doing a compression test.  it's not that important how high it is.. but they should all be in the same range..

+/- 10 lbs or so..

No need to talk rebuild now..  run that baby for all it's got t^

I rebuilt mine.. it was a piece of cake with the proper manuals.
